From the moment the Crusaders entered Asia Minor, the Crusade went badly. The King and Queen were still optimistic – the Byzantine Emperor had told them that the German King Conrad had won a great victory against a Turkish army (when in fact the German army had been massacred), and the great troop was still eating well. However, whilst camping near Nicea, the remnants of the German army, including a dazed and sick King Conrad, straggled past the French camp, bringing news of their disaster. An Arquebusier and a halberdier finishing off a French Gendarme during the Italian wars. This may seem contived but there are eyewitness descriptions of scenes like this unfolding at the battle of Pavia in 1527 as Spanish, German and Italian troops hemmed in the French Gendarmes and killed them in heaps. Francis I, the King of France himself, his horse killed from under him by Italian Condottiero Cesare Hercolani, came within a whisker of being unceremoniously despatched by a common halberdier.
