If you can't afford handwoven Philippine textiles yet, there are student-friendly alternatives you can find downtown or in department stores. These batik fabrics range from 150 to 350 PHP. Yes, Visayans have been wearing batik for hundreds of years as we had strong trading ties with Java and acquired batik from them (Read Alcina 1668 and Scott 1992). This small saruk costs more or less 100 PHP and can be bought in downtown flea markets in the Philippines. The saruk was already recorded in 1521 and in various dictionaries later on. Opt for shell or wooden accessories that you can find in souvenir shops. They range from 25 to 150 PHP. Or faux jade accessories! Artifacts of these can be found in museums. This mini nigu/bilao costs about 50 if you want props. There you go!
