Ameera Butt joins NPR's Engagement team

In a note to newsroom staff, Meg Brennan, Vice President, Content Business Strategy and Operations, made the following sannouncement:

Hi all –
Beginning this week, Ameera Butt will be formally joining NPR on staff as an Editor II on the Engagement team. Ameera is well known across the newsroom having worked as a temp on the team since November 2023. Thank you to those of you who sent very kind notes recommending and supporting Ameera’s work during this process.

She will continue to work a Thursday - Monday schedule partnering with C Mandler and Elle Nett on Engagement and working closely with Jim Kane and the weekend team. She will continue to be based in LA and report to me on an interim basis until Sam Melbourneweaver joins as Managing Editor/Digital Audience Growth & Engagement in September.

Ameera comes to NPR from the LA Times where she was a Multiplatform Editor on the News Desk for two years. She was born and raised in Saudi Arabia to Pakistani parents and moved to Texas at age 10. In her past journalist lives, Ameera has covered city hall politics, agriculture, education and even dabbled in some foreign reporting using her Arabic language skills. In her spare time, she is a budding birder but likes to knit, run at the local reservoir, and do as many hikes as she can in Los Angeles. She is fluent in Urdu and Punjabi and proficient in the Egyptian and Levantine Arabic dialects, and Spanish.
