United States Migration/Geographic Mobility At A Glance: American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates

Each year, the American Community Survey publishes statistics related to migration/geographic mobility in the United States. The charts below show trends for key migration/geographic mobility estimates. These graphics are sourced from Table B07001, Table S0701, and Table DP02, available at data.census.gov.

Migration/Geographic Mobility: Percentage of Population that Moved in the Past Year [< 1.0 MB]

The percentage of movers to a different residence in 2024 was 11.8 percent, lower than 12.1 percent in 2023.
Migration/Geographic Mobility: Percentage of Population that Moved in the Past Year: Same State and Different State Moves [< 1.0 MB]

The percentage of movers to a different residence in a different state in 2024 was 2.1 percent, lower than 2.3 percent in 2023. The percentage of movers to a different residence in the same state in 2024 was 8.9 percent, lower than 9.1 percent in 2023.

Note

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges to collecting ACS data in 2020 and, as a result, the ACS experienced high rates of non-response. To address these concerns, the Census Bureau released “experimental” estimates for the 2020 ACS 1-year data. For this reason, 2020 ACS 1-year estimates are not provided in these figures. For more information on 2020 ACS data, see user note.
