Right now the different teams/companies I'm working on are wondering what happened and I'm tracking them down one by one to let them know. For anyone considering creating an international team using Slack. Just don't. This predatory business practice is unbelievable.

Made a HN thread on this - lets get more people in tech informed about how their data is not safe on Slack: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18722683 …

Just called
@SlackHQ and they said they have a team looking into this. I told them that my previous two support messages have still gone unanswered. I'll keep this thread updated with any correspondence from their side.הצג שרשור זה -
Still no response at all and its the end of the workday in eastern US. I am surprised how long it takes them to reverse a ban or to issue some sort of statement on this.

I decided to try my account one more time. My account is back but still no correspondence from
@SlackHQ.הצג שרשור זה

This is just terrible and absurd
how come they target users like you? Purely by last name or what??? This is insane

Honestly have no clue. IP based banning is stupid because there are a ton of Iranian Americans who travel back and forth and have slack on their phone. They will inevitably register an Iranian IP somewhere in their account.
-
hi, do you mind if I ask if you're a resident? I am trying to understand who this idiotic move affected - e.g. Iranian Americans born here who travel, 1st gen folks, etc. Just curious how bad this will end up being PR-wise for them.

I'm a US Citizen and live in PA lol

Not even a "if you think this was in error, please contact support" or ANYTHING?!
-
they even sent it from a "no-reply" address, in case their messaging wasn't clear enough

It's a good opportunity to take ownership of your data by choosing a self-hosted solution.

Unfortunately I don't control many of the workplaces I'm under and can only have so much of an influence. After this though, I don't think the workplaces are going to want to stay on Slack.
-
I hate that this is a thing. I've actively avoided, and encouraged moves away from,
@SlackHQ (and Skype) previously, even to the point of recommending MS Teams in some cases. This was due to how much I dislike the s/w itself, but now I have another reason.

Nobody visited one of those countries and accessed Slack? I believe it’s like a 100k fine or each person they let use their software in any of those countries. That’s why they are pretty strict. I’m not suggesting it isn’t in error. Sorry that sucks.

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2014/03/11/2014-05210/publication-of-iran-general-license-d-1 … That's actually not true. From my understanding Slack doesn't even need to do anything (its how gmail, etc still operate in Iran)

Google does blackhole Iran traffic for some of their services (like Google Cloud or App Engine)
