Preschooler: 1 - 3 years

 

Every child is different and will, therefore, develop at his or her own pace. However, according to experts, there are specific milestones that should be achieved by certain ages and stages in life in order to properly grow and develop.

1 YEAR

  • Cries when parent leaves
  • Prefers favorite things and people
  • Tries to help while dressing
  • Uses simple gestures
  • Mimics words and movements
  • Looks at the correct picture or thing when it’s named
  • Starts to use things correctly
  • Follows simple requests
  • Gets to a sitting position without help
  • Stands alone & walks holding on to furniture
  • May take a few steps without holding on

1.5 YEARS

  • Likes to hand things to others; points at things
  • May get angry
  • Explores alone
  • Says several single words
  • Knows how to use ordinary things (e.g. brush, spoon)
  • Points to body parts
  • Follows commands
  • Walks alone; may run or walk up steps
  • Pulls toys while walking
  • Helps to undress
  • Drinks from a cup; eats with a spoon
 

2 YEARS

  • Mimics others; likes being with other children
  • Points to things
  • Names familiar people and body parts
  • Says sentences with 2 to 4 words
  • Follows simple instructions
  • Begins to recognize shapes and colors; names things in picture books
  • Completes sentences and rhymes in familiar books
  • Plays simple imaginary games
  • Uses one hand more than the other
  • Follows 2-step instructions
  • Stands on tips of his toes
  • Can kick a ball
  • Begins to run

3 YEARS

  • Mimics adults and friends
  • Shows many emotions; may get upset with changes in his routine
  • Can be separated from parents without complaining
  • Dresses and undresses without help
  • Names most familiar things
  • Says his first name, age, and sex
  • Talks well enough and is understood by strangers
  • Plays with toys that have buttons and moving parts; assembles 3-4 piece puzzles
  • Draws a circle
  • Turns pages from a book one at a time
  • Builds block towers with 6 or more bricks
  • Screws and unscrews lids; turns door handle
  • Climbs well
  • Runs easily
  • Walks up and down stairs
