Biography

First cosmonaut from Poland.

Miroslav Hermaszewski was born on September 15, 1941 in the village of Lipniki to a peasant family. His father died in 1944 during the Second World War. In 1961, he graduated from middle school and entered High Aviation School in Demblin. After graduation in 1965, he served with the Polish Air Force. In 1971, he graduated from the Karol Sverchevski Military Academy.

In 1976 he was accepted into the Soviet cosmonaut unit (1976 Intercosmos Group # 1) together with Zenon Jankowski. He underwent the full general space preparation course under the Intercosmos program for co-operation with socialist countries. He made his space flight from June 27 through July 5, 1978, as research cosmonaut of the space ship Soyuz-30 (call sign - Kavkas-2) together with Soviet cosmonaut Pyotr Illyich Klimuk. The cosmonauts worked onboard the orbital complex Salyut-6 - Soyuz -29 - Soyuz -30 together with Vladimir Vasyllyevich Kovalenok and Aleksandr Sergeyevich Ivanchenkov. Their stay in space was 7 days 22 hours 2 minutes and 59 seconds.

After 1978, he continued service in the Polish Air Force. In 1981 - 1982 was a member of Poland's Military Council for National Salvation. In 1982 he graduated from the Voroshilov Military Academy in Moscow. He served as the Chief of the Shkola Orlyat High Aviation School (1982 - 1985). Afterwards, he served in the Defence Office of Poland (1985 - 1989). He is currently retired.

Awards: Hero of the Soviet Union. Awarded Soviet Order of Lenin, Poland Order of Krest Grunvald, others orders and medals.
