Introduction / History

The Onge are a Scheduled Tribe of India living in the Andaman Islands largely on Little Andaman Island. They used to be nomads and hunters and they are hunters today also. It is believed they migrated from Africa a long time ago. The population of the Onge has lessened considerably probably due to contact with other people in the world and not of their tribe. The Onge managed to live through the 2004 tsunami by sheltering.

Many of the Onge have become addicted to alcohol and this has caused concern regards their existence as there may be little more than a hundred of them. Many of the Onge do not seem to be able to have children. The child mortality is high too. These also could cause problems for their existence.

The Onge speak their own language by the same name Onge. They have traditional religions.

The Orenge or Onge tribes are easy to find. They build their own homes. As well as alcohol addiction there seems to be some drug addiction also. The Indian Government and NGOs are trying to help them with their problems. They are hunters and now do fishing as well and other work too. The Onge are shy by nature. They have their own lifestyles. It is said they have festivals to prevent more tsunamis.

Prayer Points

* Pray that instead of alcohol and drugs the Onge will turn to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that they will not decrease further in numbers.
* Pray that they will not look to festivals for protection but to Jesus Christ.
