Choral Music at Wolfson

Choir

Wolfson College Choir is conducted by Lyn Alcntara, Director of College Music and a member of the BBC Singers. It is a mixed choir which draws its membership from across the college community. All college members and their partners are welcome to attend. There are no auditions, but enthusiasm, commitment and a basic ability to sing in tune are expected.

The choir rehearses each Monday night during term from 8-10pm in the Lee Hall. We usually perform at least one concert and one service per term as well as singing at the college summer garden party and the occasional external event. Recent non-college highlights include singing on BBC Songs of Praise and performing in Mahler's Symphony of thousand at Ely Cathedral.

In June 2006 and June 2007 the choir travelled to Rome, for several joint performances with Amici di Musica, an Italian choir with which Wolfson choir has long-standing links. In 2006 the program included a collection of sacred music by Mozart, including "Santa Maria", "Ave verum" and "Laudate dominum" from "Vesperae solennes". In 2007 the two choirs performed Vivaldi's "Gloria" and "Beatus vir", along with Pergolesi's "Stabat mater", sung by Yuri Takenaka (soprano) and Lyn Alcntara (mezzo soprano).

Our repertoire is a mix of sacred and secular, ranging from the Renaissance through to the twentieth century, including lighter music for garden parties and dinners. Recent works performed include: Britten Hymn to St. Cecilia, Purcell Ode on St. Cecilia's Day, Haydn St. Nicholas Mass, Messiah Part 1, Mozart Requiem, Brahms Requiem, Finzi In Terra Pax and Rutter Gloria. Most of the larger scale works are performed with a small orchestra. Please contact the conductor at lma24 <at> cam.ac.uk for further information.
