Welcome to the Centre of Development Studies

The Centre of Development Studies was formally established in January 2012 as an independent centre within the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS). The Centre of Development Studies provides a focus for students wishing to undertake an MPhil or PhD in the area of development. We provide interdisciplinary training where content and style have kept abreast with the changing reality of the developing world.

Admissions to the Centre of Development Studies

Start your journey with us. The Centre of Development Studies offers two postgraduate course - the one year MPhil in Developments Studies, and the full time PhD in Development Studies. Each year the Centre welcomes around 15 PhD students, and 65 MPhil students. For those wishing to apply, you can find more information about the requirements and how to make your application by following the link below. Courses

Choose your path. The MPhil in Development Studies has five core papers and a number of option papers, covering a wide spectrum of subjects within the field of Development Studies. PhD students can also attend these papers, and in their first year are given research methods training. Further details of each course are available through the link below.

Alumni

Since 2012, close to 200 students have graduated from the Centre of Development Studies. These students have gone on to hold a variety of positions in national and international development agencies and NGOs, as well as in consultancy, business, academic teaching, and journalism. Others have pursued their studies to the doctoral level in Cambridge and in other universities, in the UK and overseas. We are currently working on developing our Alumni Network.

Ajit

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Professor Ajit Singh passed away on Tuesday 23rd June 2015. A Memorial Service will take place in the Michaelmas Term.
