Nicola Buckley has worked in public engagement roles for the University since 2004 and has been the head of the public engagement team since 2010. Her role includes overseeing the annual Cambridge Science Festival, Cambridge Festival of Ideas, other public events and public engagement initiatives. These include the Cambridge Community Knowledge Exchange, which matches research requests from civil society organisations with student dissertation opportunities. Nicola is studying part-time for a PhD at the Institute of Education, University of London, investigating opportunities and challenges in co-creating student social science research projects with civil society organisations. Nicola has a BA in History and an MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Science and Society from the Open University. Prior to her current role at the University, Nicola worked in fundraising and communications roles in the UK voluntary sector, for Addaction, Fight for Sight and Breast Cancer Haven.

Dr Dane Comerford

Dr Dane Comerford has worked in research-intensive universities for the last decade and currently manages public engagement training and events at the University of Cambridge, providing a service to over 100 academic departments. Events connect academic research with around 50,000 public participants and reach a global audience via online, print, TV and radio coverage. Training activities include structured courses, a series of technique-led sessions and bespoke workshops for research groups.

Dane has a Masters of Natural Sciences from the University of Birmingham and a PhD in laser spectroscopy and diamond growth kinetics from the University of Bristol. He was a JSPS research fellow at Kyoto University and has previously worked at the Centre for Public Engagement at the University of Bristol; see short films Changing Perspectives (connecting acrobatics, robotics and biology) and Discover (hands-on activities in a shopping Centre). His public engagement connections include colleagues at RISTEX in Tokyo, the Royal Society of London and the Science Festival Alliance in Cambridge, USA.



Malavika Anderson

Malavika Anderson is responsible for the co-ordination of the annual Festival of Ideas – curating, delivering and evaluating a series of public engagement projects in the arts, humanities and social sciences. She is also responsible for managing and delivering the Rising Stars training programme in Public Engagement for early career researchers. Prior to joining the University, Malavika worked extensively in the cultural sector in institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Goethe-Institut. Malavika has a BA (Hons) in English and an MA in Arts and Aesthetics covering the History of Art, Performance studies and Film studies.

 

Dr Lucinda Spokes

Dr Lucinda Spokes is the Festival and Training Co-ordinator.  This role involves facilitating public engagement training for research staff and students and co-ordinating specific strands of the Cambridge Festivals. Lucinda studied Chemistry at University of Birmingham and moved to the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia for her PhD. Following this, Lucinda spent 14 years as a research scientist studying the impact of human activity on the oceans. She moved into science outreach as part of a EU funded education project producing a web-based climate encyclopaedia for schools and the general public.  Prior to her current position, Lucinda worked for STEM Team East, the STEMNET contract holder for Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, running hands-on STEM activities for school pupils and providing advice on STEM enrichment opportunities and schemes to teachers. She is an active member of Cambridge Association for Women in Science and Engineering and a STEM Ambassador.

 

Sue Long

Sue Long joined the Public Engagement team in 2008 to deliver the schools and community programmes for the 800th Anniversary celebrations.  As the Festivals and Outreach Officer, Sue is responsible for coordinating the Open Cambridge weekend and she also manages the schools and community outreach programme for both the Science Festival and the Festival of Ideas.   Prior to working for the Public Engagement team, Sue worked for Lucy Cavendish College as the Student Outreach Officer, and before that she was part of the Widening Participation team at the Cambridge Admissions Office.  Sue has a BA (Hons) in History from Cambridge.
 

Kathryn Muir

Kathryn Muir has worked in the team since October 2013. She coordinates Cambridge Community Knowledge Exchange, where students complete research projects with local community organisations. She also helps coordinate ESRC-supported Impact Acceleration workshops, connecting researchers in the social sciences with representatives from external organisations for the purpose of knowledge exchange. She administrates the UnLtd  Award scheme for student, staff and graduate social entrepreneurs. Kathryn has a BA in Sociology from the University of Leeds.Hons).

 

Mandy Garner

Mandy Garner works on the Festival of Ideas and the Cambridge Series at the Hay Festival, organising debates and publicising events. She also works in the communications office publicising the Gates Cambridge Trust. Mandy’s background is in education and health journalism. She was features editor of the Times Higher Education Supplement and also worked for the BBC as a senior broadcast journalist as well as for the writers' association International PEN as a researcher on freedom of expression issues.
