If you intend to conduct research as part of your course which involves contact with children or adults, you may be required to obtain a check from the Disclosure and Barring Service. Your Department will determine whether a check is required for your research and this will become a condition of your offer.
If you firmly accept a conditional or unconditional offer of a place on such a course you will be issued by the Student Registry with:
- A DBS Application Form
- A letter explaining the application process, payment procedure, and what needs to happen once you have received your DBS Certificate.
- An FAQ's sheet
- ID documents sheet
For further information and guidance please see DBS FAQ's.
Research Passports
As a Graduate Student, admitted via the Board of Graduate Studies, you will need a Research Passport if you are proposing to carry out research in the NHS and you have no contractual relationship with the NHS. If you are unsure whether you require a Research Passport please contact the Research and Development office at the Trust where you intend to carry out your research for clarification. Further details on applying for a Research Passport can be found on the Student Registry web site.
When applying for a Research Passport you may also need to have a Disclosure certificate or equivalent. To apply for DBS clearance please ask your Department/Faculty to email [email protected] with your name, college and address details and an application form will be sent to you. The current fee for seeking an Enhanced Disclosure is £44 and £26 for a Standard Disclosure.
In addition, a Protection of Children Act (PoCA) check will be required if the research will enable you to have regular contact with children in the course of normal research activities. This check is done as part of the CRB application process.
