10 Ways Xbox 360 Changed Gaming

Achievements, matchmaking, digital distribution, and more -- we chart Xbox 360's innovations.

By: Matt Clark

Achievements? A downloadable game marketplace? High-definition graphics? These terms have become so commonplace in the console gaming lexicon that it's easy to forget just five short years ago, they essentially didn't exist. Whether you're an Xbox 360 fanatic, a PlayStation 3 admirer, or a Nintendo enthusiast, we can all hopefully agree on one thing -- the 360 has brought along a lot of innovation. In honor of the console's November 22nd fifth anniversary, here are just 10 ways that Xbox 360 changed gaming.

High-Definition Graphics

In 2005, the prices of HD televisions were only beginning to reach reasonable levels. Well, that's if you consider around $3,500 reasonable. Even with the cost barrier, Microsoft clearly believed that high-definition gaming was the future. HD televisions are now in 56% of homes, and many gamers have come to expect crystal clear graphics when playing big, triple-A titles. After all, what's the point of teabagging your friend in Halo if it's not presented in stunning, 1920x1080 resolution?

Achievements

The sound of an achievement being unlocked -- bloop! -- followed by the little on-screen notification, has become an iconic symbol in gaming. It became so popular, in fact, that Sony followed suit with the Trophy system on the PlayStation 3. Achievements have allowed developers to present players with additional challenges that may have otherwise gone unnoticed, upping the replay value of a number of games. Of course, they also probably brought out previously dormant obsessive-compulsive disorders. Remember, there's no achievement for straightening out the fringe on your area rug with a pocket comb at 3 a.m.

Microsoft Points

Love them or hate them, the Xbox 360's Microsoft Points represent the first instance of a gaming network maintaining its own currency. Some may argue -- understandably so -- that the conversion from real-life dollars to points constitutes an attempt on Microsoft's part to deceive consumers as to the actual cost of downloadable content. But the bizarre point conversion has become indoctrinated among Xbox 360 owners, and the ability to use the same points across multiple marketplaces (Live, Zune, Games for Windows) is rather convenient.

Trial Games

Remember when we were dependent upon gaming magazines to obtain discs loaded with demos? Sure, PC gaming was already light years ahead in terms of digital demo distribution, but console gamers lacked a thorough way to really experience what games had to offer before purchase. Thanks to Xbox Live's "trial game" feature, players gained the ability to test out nearly every game available on the Marketplace, as well as most retail titles. It's nothing to be taken lightly; trial games have allowed even smaller titles the ability to prove to a potential consumer that the game is worth your hard-earned Microsoft Points.

  • 360 Rules this generation!

Like it or not the fact is that the 360 simply has the best of everything in this generation. Microsoft got a lot of things right with the 360 this time round unlike Sony who got caught sleeping and with theri pants down. 360 has arguably the Best games, best multipayer platform in the form of Xbox live, sure you have to pay for it but it is much better than Sonys option. And look at how much xbox live has evolved sony is simply playing catch up at this point. Now with kinect out it may not be relevant for this generation but Microsft brought it out for a reason and I can bet you that next console from Microsoft will make full use of it. This was the same when xbox live first lauched in the original xbox the concept was new for consoles and many people thought it was not going take off, but look how fully it got integrated into the 360. So dredit has to be given to Microsoft for innovating the home console market and providing users/palyers with simply the best gaming experience around...... Sorry sony and nintendo funboys, but it is the truth.

I agree with lots of the points made here (Im an achievement whore lol) they matter more than the score even though it does drivr me, but if 360 hadnt done it I think another machine would have. Nonetheless there are good points here.

No Hard drive, no wireless receiver, no HDMI, craptastic XBLA marketplace points that you end up losing money on because you can't just charge your credit card...

Plus acheivements/trophies and gamerscores? I know I'm not the only one who finds both things just annoying, and regardless, even if you love them to death, how are either revolutionary?

The new 360's solve most of these issues, but the fact it's taken Microsoft five years to fix these "revolutionary," problems, says something.

And don't forget the red ring! Viva la revolucion!

    • Rowain
    • It didn't take five years

      Posted: 12/28/2010 by Rowain

I bought an Elite in 2007 and it came with a 120GB Hard drive and a HDMI cable. The wireless adapter was a moronic oversight on their part, and the separate one could waaaay too much. And like it or not, achievements have spawned a whole new community of gamers, which is big enough to be called revolutionary. The idea was simple, rewarding completionists and perfectionists, but the results have been pretty crazy, with people buying and playing games solely FOR achievements. While I still enjoy playing simply for the sake of it, I also do a lot of playing for achievements. They've added depth and replay value where there was none before, challenging you to do something for the reward of bragging rights. It doesn't even matter if people care about your own gamerscore, it's the sense of completion and success that you yourself get from it.

Microsoft did a lot of things right in this generation. Many worried that the XBox would simply turn into a PC-like device when really it became a hardcore gamer's system that had features that only enhanced the experience. Xbox Live isn't perfect but it works well and is worth the cost of not having to worry about excessive cheating, mods, and other crap that you have to put up with on PC gaming.

Explain to me why every PC gamer i know has an insane hatred for console gaming. As a Xbox/PS2 person i am constantlyberated with people saying how much console gaming sucks and how it is nothing like PC gaming. I plan to stay on console and not have invest in a expensive gaming PC for no reason. I love the Xbox 360. I have a 2007 Xbox and i have no problems whatsoever and i like having a controller. But back to my original point why do some PC gamers just hate console?

    • MarioDragon
    • Because

      Posted: 12/27/2010 by MarioDragon

Compare a modern PC's power to an Xbox or the PS3. They failmiserablyin comparison. Graphics are worse, amount that can be done is severely limited compared to PC's, and you can't do major editing, video recording, picture editing, write a school thesis, or anything else that is incredibly useful.

Now of course the consoles have their upsides, being much much cheaper, the simplicity of it, how easy it is to start a game without crashes 90% of the time, without having to go through hours of reinstalling Windows because you got a malware that is undetectable by anything or anyone, or having to worry about your HDD completely failing because the SATA cable broke off the connector. Consoles generally have warranties, are then sent back to factory, obviously sent back to you, usually good as new with a still working hard drive. Usually.

My point is, PC's win in every single way once you get right down to it. But, because of the general appealing to the population of the world, the ease of use, and because it doesn't cost more than 300 dollars or so, consoles have their uses. Keyboard/controller is really a preference, and a stupid reason to say PC's are better than consoles all because of a piece of plastic with a 10 button or 50 key difference. I guess I'm forgetting the mouse but a mouse is just as fast as an analog stick, and I really don't care what anyone has to say about that.

    • Fail in every way??

      Posted: 12/27/2010 by gonzagawop

Fail in every way? The only real advantage pcs have over consoles is upgradability... Arguing better graphics is moot if the software doesn't bridge the gap. The only game in recent memory that showcased pc superiority was Crysis and now better programming has brought those games nearly equally to ps3 and xbox. Every pc enthusiast knows that hardware specs have surpassed the capabilities of software so you can spend thousands of dollars on your god pc that can run multiple porn sites simultaneously but it is not good for much else in gaming. One exception is mods and the size of multiplayer games but even then those are things I can live without. Pc gaming is dying with MMOs keeping the genre on life support. Consoles are the future. Pcs are the number 1 worst investment you can make.

    • MarioDragon
    • Are you stupid, or something?

      Posted: 12/27/2010 by MarioDragon

I mean, really? Seriously? You SERIOUSLY made a comment as dumb as that? I sir, am amazed, and congratulate you.

First, you should re-read my long first comment. I included video recording and major editing, which Adobe has kindly come out with CS5 to completely use i7's and 64-bit software to it's maximum potential, and even then over clocking could send it further.

You've never played something like Halo, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, any of the CoD games, or basically any game that's on the 360 and PC, and compared the graphics, have you? ALL those win, and with some mods you can DOWNLOAD, they further win.

And as for saying it's the worst investment you can make, lol, I have never laughed harder in my life. Don't get me wrong I own all consoles and a beast PC, but you really need to think before you talk. Oh and I'm a Mormon, I don't look at porn, sorry you like thinking about other dude's doin that though, I guess it's your problem.

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by dunadan72

I don't think that charging for extras that we used to be able to unlock by actually playing a game through should be thought of as progressive or as some sort of innovation. It's pure marketing and consumer gouging, simple as that. Unfortunately, M$'s bean counters figured that there were enough people willing to fork out money for stuff like new levels or new outfits that there wouldn't be any sort of backlash.

Time has proven them right, and paying for extra content is now the norm.

Don't get me wrong...I will pay for a classic (full) game that is offered through Live or PSN. But to pay so that I can play Force Unleashed using Luke Skywalker instead of Starkiller? GOLD membership not renewed!! Laughing

1920x1080 is only supported by a handfull of games, most games are just scaled up a bit (or a lot). Just look here: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241 . Halo is a very bad example too since it's only 1152x640 (no AA). Most games do support 1280x720p which is considered "hd". If you have a 7 year old pc monitor it will have a resolution of 1280x1024 so nothing new.

  • nipsen
  • No offense, but..

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by nipsen

...I guess you can't expect more from someone who seems to think five years ago is ancient history.

    Still.. this:

"Even with the cost barrier, Microsoft clearly believed that high-definition gaming was the future."

..is actually flatly false, in every possible sense. They actually believed the opposite of that. All their tech at the time, their sdks, their development guidelines - favoured sdtvs. So does the hardware, and it still does. It doesn't have a buffer for the graphics card that has room for expansion, for example. There's no vision on pixel-operations for scenes larger than that 1024x720 resolution that's become the de facto standard for "HD". The approach with high amounts of anti-aliasing and colour and post-filtering on the graphics array is 100% geared towards sd televisions only, and low resolution gaming. And it's a very conscious choice because the larger part of the market is still on sd televisions.

It's not that they've used HD as a marketing tool either, beyond slapping a label on the console box. They have people still going around lecturing their "contacts" on "visual science", and the way HD is a sham. They've really been about as subtle with their propaganda as that.

The 360 also notoriously lacks any kind of actual surround sound. The lack of a hdd is prohibitive for people who don't have a stable internet connection if they want to use it as a media-hub. So as a product, it doesn't deliver on any of those points in the way that even a tabletop PC would.

And that's been the curse of the xbox from the beginning - we've had more powerful PCs since before the launch. But programs and games have been kept exclusive for no reason other than marketing. While actual stronger hardware on PCs would largely be unused, thanks to the "industry standard" MS set.

Anyway, besides all of that - the xbox was and still is king of local multiplayer. That's where it made headway. At creating that social gaming experience in front of the screen. The party functions that turned up on xbl later is a great evolution of that, and this deserves praise. Nevertheless - this came late - long, long after whatever.. gamespy, steam, and any kind of client software under an MMO had used. And it's been copied straight out of that because it worked. But to call that innovation..? That's just not how it happened.

So no offense, but why does 1up print things like this? The angle isn't even "from my perspective as a gamer, who owned a Mac once, and then bought a console - this looks awesome to me", or something like that. It's just creating something out of whole cloth, that's more... let's use the word "favourable" to xbox and xbl than even the most enterprising salesman at MS, at least at the moment.

While also turning the table on what happened less than three years ago. I mean.. it's not even two years since MS slammed HD publically for being a sales-trick, used by, you know.. slit-eyed japanese, to lead astray impressionable Americans and their hard-earned cash. :p

But now, suddenly MS has "always been about HD gaming". lol.. I mean, really..

Achievements though have to be the best thing from the 360,it brings me back to old school gaming when scores use to mean something. Now its more of you beat the game or you dont beat the game, back in the day it was more about whats your score on that game? The gamerscore on 360 brings me back and makes me play the xbox more.I own all the systems but if a game is on multi systems I'll buy it on 360 first for the gamerscore and I know I'm not the only one just look at the sales charts. One of the reason why 360 games sell more than ps3 it isnt all about system numbers kudos microsoft kudos!!!!! :0 ps trophys suck people want a gamerscore and god damn it wii why havent you jumped on the band wagonI like nintendo the most but achievements pull me away from my wii!!!!!!:(

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by JewUnit

Reading this article got me thinking of an old 1UP article. Before the Xbox 360 launched, Sam wrote an article comparing the 360 to the Dreamcast and how the 360 would succeed where the Dreamcast failed. It turns out most of the reasons were true. Xbox Live was a huge deal, the marketing was well put-together, and Halo 3 pulled in lots of people. Square-Enix's support and backwards compatibility didn't make or break the consolel, but the perception that Microsoft had covered all of its bases was good enough to warrant a purchase for most people. Add in an excellent library of games and a solid interface and you have a large, satisfied userbase. The 360 has lasted quite a bit longer than the Dreamcast and looks to be supported for years to come. Scoff at the system all you want, but you can't argue with results.

Of course it's a good idea to give people more options for making purchases online.

      The bad idea was:

      1) Making the points to dollars ratio convoluted.1 point = 1.25 cents causes (deliberate?) confusion and doesn’t benefit the consumer.

      2) Only selling the points in chunks that don’t line up to the common product price points. This actually directly undermined the “more options” benefit.

      Posted: 12/16/2010 by nipsen

I'm not going to go into the reasoning about why "installs" was such a big deal, and how the hdd-less version of the xbox made sure a lot of games were made in a different way than they could have been.. and how that means installing to hdd actually doesn't cause much of a performance increase....on a game that isn't just thrown into mastering with no thought, at least... but largely will be a way to avoid the noise from the dvd-drive, and all that..

But there are a few games on ps3 with an option to "install to hdd" in the game-menus. Valkyria Chronicles, for example. A few multiplatform games have the same thing.

Seriously, though.. But why are the installs a good thing? Since you still have to use the disc. It still spins up once in a while. It's great because it alleviates the performance issues that should never have been present with the dvd-mastering and copy-protection in the first place.

It's only great because the "dvd only" solution sucks so much.

Other platforms/games have their own systems in place for individual achievements - PS3, World of Warcraft, etc - but only 360 has one single, unifying score that neatly ties it all together. It's so much more powerful to have that Gamerscore right there, front and center on your profile than it is to actually have to go into someone's profile, look at their list of games, pick one of those games, and THEN see their achievements/trophies. Most people only do that with their closest friends/rivals, whereas everybody sees everybody else's Gamerscore automatically.

    • Defninja
    • umm

      Posted: 12/22/2010 by Defninja

Trophies and achevements are the same thing (in game accomplishments), akin to Gamerscore (the larger number tally on 360 telling you game alot) and Gamer levels (the small number next to the trophy star on PS3 which also tells how much gaming you have done). So even the PS3 has a "single unifying score that ties it all together".

Don't really think a lot of those are attributed to the 360 itself and more the fact that Microsoft came first in releasing their console. The entertainment hub and high definition thing were done by the PS3, as would be game demos, and the rest are from the PC. The only ones the 360 did 'on it's own' is Achievements (not new, try R&C's Skill Points) and Kinect.

Also, fail in that almost all 360 games are in 720, not 1080. Heck not even Halo 3 could crack to 720 when it came out.

    • DarkSideSol
    • where do you get this stuff

      Posted: 11/23/2010 by DarkSideSol

The 360 was out a clear year before the ps3 - fact.

MS is the first company to introduce online gaming - fact - introduced on the dreamcast - which came out before the ps2 did - guess what os it ran - that's right windows derivative.

Most it not all 360 games upscale to 1080p - native is 720p - Halo 3 was the exception not the rule

most PS3 games only go up to 720p - fact this is the rule not the exception.

Comparing the entertainment hub aspect of the ps3 is a joke compared to the 360 are you kidding me? It tool k the ps3 muliple firmware updates before it could even properly access my windows network and the internet at the same time - fail.

I like both my Ps3 fat and slim as much as the next guy and gal, but the 360 is the uber console

Speaking of "where do you get this stuff".....how does that mean that MS were the first to introduce online gaming? Sega's engineers were the ones who built the Dreamcast, not Microsoft. MS had no input into the hardware whatsoever. Their ONLY involvement with the Dreamcast was simply licensing Windows CE to Sega for use as the OS. They had nothing to do with Sega's decision to include a modem and online gaming on the Dreamcast.

Wow, talk about stretching to make a point. LOL

Achievements add value to a game, it's as simple as that. They are relatively easy to implement, so their absence makes no sense.

As an entertainment hub it's made my life easier. My Xbox is used for all my music, movies and tv shows. All of which is downloaded or uploaded onto hard-drives or streamed. The only discs I have to change are the games. (and those are usually played from the hard-drive too) The only other device in my entertainment center is a bluray player that rarely gets used.

Achievements and gamerscore also kick ass. It encourages you to use one online identity through all games and establish reputation by allowing other gamers to easily compare games and experience.

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by mynameisnoneofyourconcern

    1. I would really like to know(because it's stated in the article)was it microsoft or playstation who had the first 1080p game? I know that microsoft offered up to 1080p resolution, but i think i remember that except for the elite 360system, you couldn't even hook up an hdmi cable to an xbox360. (this hassince been corrected by microsoft) If anyone can find out whichgaming systemwas the first to have a true 1080p game, i'd sure appreciate it. Cast your votes Now!

    2. Are people actually still trying to get achievments? Are theseeven important to anyone?

    • haonetat01
    • You don't need an HDMI

      Posted: 11/22/2010 by haonetat01

The Xbox360 is one of the few devices that will pass a 1080p signal through component cables, you just need a TV that will accept a 1080p signal through component cables (I know the Sharp Aquos models will).

And by "true 1080p" I'm assuming you mean that the native resolution is 1080p, I want to say it was a sports game, like 2K Tennis or something but I can't remember. It doesn't really matter, Sony dropped the ball on PS3 by not including a built-in scaler and having all games play in their native resolution therefore effectively shutting out people with 1080i only TV's (on a 1080i only TV the PS3 will display 720p games, as pretty much all are, in 480p). I still know people with these TV's who have sold the PS3 for a 360 because they can game in HD on their 360 and not on their PS3.

Ultimately it was left up to the developers to find a solution and so now you see alot of the big games like CoD supporting all resolutions that way they don't leave anyone out. I know people (especially the hardcore Sony fans) like to throw around the term "true 1080p" alot, but it's meaningless. The amount of games that are natively written in 1080p is so small that it's irrelevant. If you have a 360 then it scales everything to 1080p, and a scaled 1080p image looks better than a native 720p image. Don't let the big corporations fool you, HDMI was invented so that they could better control what you do with your media and that's it, otherwise we'd all be using VGA.

    • JTiizii
    • hey hey

      Posted: 11/23/2010 by JTiizii

the first games to come out for the 360 weren't in 1080p so y would you need anything other than the cables that come with the xbox? also those cables are able to put out to 1080i even though some of those games were only 720p. later they corrected their mistake by adding the hdmi slot, and now they added the optical output slot which they had on their component cables.

and achievements are the same thing as trophies on the ps3 its just that ps3 didnt have trophies until they realized ppl really enjoyed achievements. i love them cause it gives me much more to do in the game rather than just play through it. and avatar awards are awesome! im not gonna say ms came up with the avatar idea cause we all know that is bs but i have more fun making an avatar on the 360 rather than ps3 or wii cause my avatar is not overly cartoony and not too realistic. either way achievements are a blast.

I rarely disagree with 1UP, but this time around the legacy left by the likes of Garnett Lee among others that have left in recent years is beginning to be felt. Let me start by stating that I do like the Xbox 360 and I was one of the early adopters who camped out two nights to get it at launch. Unfortunately I don't like the direction Microsoft has taken in recent years, i.e. Avatars, child-like interface, unable to play old DLC games on newer consoles (thanks to three RROD) and an even more expensive XBL Gold subscription. So I have been playing my PS3 more than I would've ever imagined. And now I read about the 10 ways the Xbox 360 "changed" gaming. More like barely modified it! High definition graphics?! Really?!!! It didn't even use an HDMI cable until two years later and last I heard HD-DVD died a quick, yet painful dead for all of those that bought into it. Microsoft Points?! Why is this even good, they're a complete rip-off!!! You always end up with more points than you need and then offer you Avatar items for exactly that extra few points you didn't use. Trial games?! How old is the person who wrote this article?!!! I'm not even gonna get into this one 'cause it's just plain stupid! Digital distribution?! C'mon they were the first mainstream, but hardly a paradigm shift. Matchmaking?!!! Has the person who wrote this even played with a real computer?! iPad and iPhones don't count you jackass! Kinect?! Really?!!! It hasn't even been out for more than a couple of months and you're already stating that it changed the gaming industry. Besides, isn't Kinect more of a way for Microsoft to capitalize on the Wii market? C'mon guys, this article was beyond biased, it was lazy and unprofessional. Sorry 1UP.

someone has a case of the grumpies. slow down read the article and pull the ps3 out of your ass. no im not a 360 fanboy since i currently own a ps3 as well and love it. but the online is far better than the ps3. and as for digital distribution, the article clearly states that steam has been doing this since 2003 but 360 started it on CONSOLES. the article doesnt say HD dvd player as a contribution, it says hd graphics. never mind that hdmi was added later, the component cables were enough cause most games werent even presented in 1080p from the start. ms points are better than buying in stores. not only can you add points here and there or save a trip to the store, you pay no taxes when buying ms points. they should have stated that downloadable trial games were started on the 360 as far as CONSOLES go. yeah yeah we know steam did it on pc. stfu and pay attention to what the article is saying. and lastly, im not even gonna tell you its just been in the article even though it is (and i know i just said it, i'm just being dramatic)

      Kinect

Yes, it still remains to be seen just how much of an impact Kinect will have on gaming. Microsoft is marketing Kinect's sans-controller functionality as being the next big evolution for the Xbox. Obviously, the accessory is a technological advancement, but it's just too early to tell if Kinect is a game-changing innovation or just another toy. Regardless, it's a fitting tribute to the risks Microsoft has taken with the Xbox over the last five years.

as you read this did you realize how much of an idiot you look like? yes they talked about kinect, and OMG we know that wii started motion gaming, when you read the last sentence of this part did you feel like a jackass? cause you should. he stated its a fitting tribute. and i agree. all the changes made to the xbox like marketplace n such are great. watching movies using my voice as a control is fantastic.

Everything costs the same. It's 99 cents on itunes, it's 80 MS points in Zune, A ten dollar map pack is 800 points. the scale has always been 400 pts= $5.00

I don't get where people come off that they get cheated. If you do the math (see above) you'll see that you have always payed the exact same amount you would've with cashy-money. The points you have left over are not lost, and are usually a product of slightly cheaper DLC.

For the longest time, Zune marketplace only charged 79 pts. per song. That makes that song cheaper than its itunes counterpart. It's like a built in rewards card giving you 1% back on every purchase. How are you cheated then?

with ms points you dont pay taxes. with cash you do. i work at gamestop and if you buy the dlc in the store it charges tax. and with ms points if you have more than you need to spend you still have your money. its not like if you pay for 1600 points and buy something that costs 800 it takes the other 800 away. you still have your money and you are saving a little bit here and there.

    • I disagree

      Posted: 11/22/2010 by Senninha

The Arcade unit has always been at the forefront of Xbox sales and that's the reason why they advertise it so much for just $199, which is a complete rip-off! Anyone who knows about videogames just a little bit will have to get the $299 console, which still pales in features to the PS3.

      Posted: 11/22/2010 by starseed072

When I worked for gamestop the year the 360 came out, I sold the STANDARD edition 3-to-1 against the Arcade edition.

They pretty much quit making arcade consoles a few months after the Elites came out.

Even then, you would have to be an idiot to say that the 360 wasn't the first to make wireless controllers standard hardware.

You would probably be kinda hard pressed to even find a wired controller in stores anymore.

no one cares that you have a ps3 in your house and your ass. also what starseed072 said is correct. and you are right. if you are into video games then y not get a harddrive with your console. the arcade was strictly for that... ARCADE. CASUAL. NON-HARDCORE. what makes me mad is the ps3 i bought isnt backwards compatible but the one before the one i bought is. makes no fucking sense y they would put backwards compatibility on one console and not the other. shit i would pay more for that... not much more but a little bit. the ps3 offers THE EXACT SAME THING save blu ray. but any game that comes out other than heavy rain and GIANT rpg's i'd rather play on my 360. so what other features other than blu ray does the ps3 offer? hd gaming? oh you can fit more on a disc... what would we ever do without blu ray? oh wait a sec... put it on more than one disc. who cares if you have to get up and switch discs. stfu u noob n make some fucking sense for once.

Nintendo is responsible for bringing gaming back from the dead, and creating some of the best games ever made.

Sony is responsible for the first true dual analog controller which revolutionized 3D gaming.

Sega is responsible for making the first big push for online gaming with the Dreamcast.

Microsoft is responsible for the addictive Achievements, and for ushering in a new era of online gaming.

They all have their homes in the book of Video Game Legends.

People love to rave about how innovative the Wii is, but many overlook the great contributions the other consoles have brought to the medium--many of which are more practical and useful than controller waggling (I even recently wrote a blog on this very point). Everything Microsoft has pioneered with the 360, from seamless matchmaking to achievements to hard drive storage (which this article doesn't even mention), will now always be the standard for future consoles.

Even Nintendo will one day have to play catch-up and begin offering at least some of the features we now take for granted on the 360. (Especially the try before you buy feature. I hate plopping down ten bucks on some WiiWare game without having any idea how good it actually is. Pretty lame, Nintendo.)

Going by this article's viewpoint the PC gaming innovations didn't count until they showed up on Xbox? PC had HD graphics, Demos, Digital Downloads, Xfire, Steam, Teamspeak/Ventrilo etc way before MS brought them to console.... The article even mentions it "Another concept Xbox 360 lifted from PC gaming...." Lame.

That's right, because the average gamer has a Steam/Direct2Drive/GFW account and also those same people teamspeak all the time. The PC gaming audience is so totally the audience that brought this to the mainstream.

Who said anything about bringing these features to the mainstream? This article is covering supposed Xbox innovations that changed gaming. I'm just pointing out that many of the ones in this article have been on PC for a while, so gaming was already changed. MS only adapted it to their platform and stylized it.

Now you may remove your head from your buttox.

...gaming. Not changed gamers lives. These things changed gaming. PC players enjoyed these first, but that didn't change gaming. The things listed here changed the way games are played. These concepts were not very innovative for the PC, in fact they took too long to develop because of the caustic environment PC gamers create with their rediculous brand loyalty. Throw this shit on a console and BLAMMO, it's everywhere and everybody is trying to cop it. I never once thought when playing my PS2 online that I wanted any of these options. Now that Xbox incorporated them, I can't live without them. That's changing gaming.

PS. Well, except Kinect. Still do not want.

This was about what the 360 did for gaming. It brought all of these PC innovations and made them work on the console.

Surprise! PCs never brought all of these innovations to consoles. Xbox did that. Therefore xbox did gaming a service by being the first to expand these innovations to a larger market and to a different game system.

Just think about things before you say them.

We all know that PCs have been able to do all of the things mentioned in the article before consoles, or the xbox 360, were able to. The problem is that when it comes to PC gaming, it's almost considered a luxury to be able to have a dedicated PC for gaming. Most people buy a regular stock PC to take care of their day to day needs, so only a small percentage of PC users were actually using all of the said features. The xbox 360 on the other hand gave consumers a piece of hardware that was dedicated to gaming and brought all of those features to console gamers.

      Posted: 11/23/2010 by Bast

Totally agree. PC gamers constitute probably like 5% (excluding casual popcap gamers) of the overall gaming community. Even though it's such a small number doesn't mean we should exclude them as gamers.

It would be like saying ... ya, there were MP3 players long before iPod came along, but it wasn't until Apple made it "cool" that they were relevant. Ya know?

I'm not trying to troll Xbox, I've had mine since day one. I agree MS was smart to implement all these PC gaming features 1st. But to give them credit for them is what erks me a bit. So, yes they did change "console" gaming in a big way ..gaming as a whole ... well, not so much.

since half these things are lifted from the PC, does it really count? The PC is mainstream gaming platform, so of course succesful practices of it would find its way to consoles. The same as succesful practics on individual consoles find their way to competing platforms. Even Achievements cant be attributed to MS, though I give them credit for making them less tangible and worthless lol.

If someone told me 6 years ago there would be this seemingly useless system of tracking things you do in a game to show to your friends, and it would be such a huge deal, I would have laughed.

But this has made me play games longer than I ever would've, and in ways I never would have imagined doing if there wasn't a little carrot on a stick telling me to kill 54 thousand zombies in Dead Rising.

It's an okay list. I will admit that XBLA rocks; really, most of the Xbox games I have (and all of the Xbox exclusives I own) are XBLA or other downloadable titles. Achievments, too, are great, but a lot of titles can do that on their own. In Shadow Complex, if I beat the game with a low item percentage, I get an achievment; if I do that in Metroid: Zero Mission, I get a picture of Samus for the gallery. Even Metroid Prime 3 and The Conduit had their own achievment-like system without tying it in to any sort of system-wide "gamerscore." Near-universal trials/demos are great, too; I like being able to try a game before plunking down money on it, especially if it's a non-refundable downloadable title. But most of the other things on this list leave me cold, especially the bizzarely valued Microsoft Points. I usually buy game codes off of Amazon rather than buy those.

This makes it so all your progress is logged into one giant score. Yea you can beat the hell out of Smash Brothers or something, but no one anywhere will see it.

I find it so hilarious how many people are arguing over this article. Other points to be made:

      1. Shut up about PC did it first, they mentioned that. About six or seven times.
      2. There was NEVER a point when the Arcade 360 outsold the other models. It was at the forefront because MS said "Starting at $199." When I worked at Gamestop we got ten 360 bundles for every solo Arcade. And sold through 20 bundles before that one Arcade.
      3. The nerds on this site are f***ing d-bag losers. You're arguing about video games. Go read a newspaper or get some fresh air.
      4. People still do achievement hunt. If a game is truly bueno, I will go out of my way to get all of them I possibly can. Four left in Mass Effect 2, couple in Borderlands...
      5. Wireless... yea. As wild as that is, simply making it so my controllerdoesn't havea mandatory tether is one of the biggest bestchanges from 360.
