Job Profile

A film director works much like an orchestra conductor – he brings together the artistic performances of many people to create a symphony. He brings the script to life with pictures, sounds and cinematic staging.

A director must therefore be able to clearly transfer his interpre-tation of the script to his crew. A film is only as good as the director’s ability to convey his ideas to the set designer, the actors, the cinematographer, the editor and the many others involved.

The director is bound by financial conditions, which however should not hinder him from developing his own artistic signature. The way he deals with his actors, with light, color, music, camera perspectives and rhythm shape his style and, along with his choice of specific themes and subjects, lead to his identity as a film director.

Alongside the artistic-creative strength and the perceptive abilities that mark a director, directing also involves a wide range of organizational tasks. Shooting has to be carefully planned. A director penetrates the material with a comprehensive research. He is involved in the production planning together with the producer and the technical-creative team.

In the shooting phase, the director is the key-leading figure for the entire artistic, technical and organization team. He must be able to inform, motivate and decide effectively. He carries the main artistic responsibility as well as shares the production-technical responsibility. In addition to talent, a high measure of personal engagement and commitment is required.
