A Crisis Requiring Leadership and Resolve

President Eisenhower giving Atoms for Peace speech at the UN, New York, 1953In 1953, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower appeared before the United Nations General Assembly to present a challenging and visionary plan called 'Atoms for Peace'.

This concept meant harnessing atomic science to the task of meeting human needs worldwide through "abundant electrical energy" and the widespread application of nuclear technologies.

Through nearly sixty years of combined and accumulating effort, thousands of people from many nations - engaged in both science and diplomacy - have built an ever-stronger foundation for the realization of that vision. Today nuclear power is an ever-improving technology that draws upon over 14,000 reactor-years of operational experience in a mature and expanding global industry. Reliable, safe and proven, this invaluable resource is available for far wider use to meet a human and environmental crisis without precedent.

Whether humanity will overcome this crisis is a question of political leadership - which depends ultimately on public understanding and public resolve.
