Application in for new Temelin units

Temelin with four units (CEZ)An application to build two new reactors at the Temelin plant has been submitted to the Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety (SUJB) by utility CEZ.

Under Czech law, the SUJB now has up to four months to review the application, although it can suspend its review if it requires further information from CEZ. It said that the time it takes to complete its review will depend on how well the supporting documentation has been prepared and how CEZ responds to any requests it makes.

CNSC reappoints president

Canada's Governor General has reappointed Michael Binder to head the national nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, for a second five-year term commencing May 2013.

Nuclear expansion in China

China's installed nuclear generating capacity will reach 42 GWe by 2015, according to China Nuclear Energy Association chairman Zhang Huazhu. Speaking at a seminar in Zhuhai City, Guangdong province, he said there will be around 41 reactors in operation in the country by that time, the People Daily reported. "At that time, China will be building nearly 20 extra nuclear power plants," Zhang said.

NIA and KAIF cooperate

The UK's Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF). Under the agreement, the organizations will promote exchange of experiences and materials in development, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants, as well as technology information on nuclear fuel and increase collaboration in academic research.
