NSTA National Conference: March 27–31

The Story of Sputnik Comes to Life at NSTA’s Boston Conference

Sputnik 1Science teachers and educators who attend NSTA’s National Conference in Boston can view David Hoffman’s award-winning film Sputnik Mania and revisit the important social and political issues of 1957—how Americans react to crisis situations, the importance of presidential leadership, the issues surrounding the relationship of politics to science, and even the ethics of using animals in experimental situations such as space. Much of Hoffman’s footage, from recently declassified film, has never been seen before. The first artificial satellite put into space successfully, SputnikI ignited the Space Race within the context of the Cold War. Hoffman’s film unfolds with immediacy, drama, and impact. One of the seven original Sputniks created by the Russians will be on display at the conference. Don’t miss this great opportunity to see and understand our history. Register for the conference

New research shows that global warming could reduce the number of hurricanes in the United States. Chunzai Wang, a research oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the study’s author explained that with every degree Celsius that the oceans warm, the wind shear increased by up to 10 mph, weakening storm formation. Critics argue that Wang’s work is based on poor data rejected by scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Hurricanes hitting land “are not a reliable record” for how hurricanes have changed, noted Kevin Trenberth, climate analysis chief for the National Center for Atmospheric Research. A former National Hurricane Center director observed that no matter who is right, hurricanes can be “deadly.”

More than 300 business leaders across the nation say colleges need to find new ways to assess a student’s ability to apply college learning to real-world settings, according to a survey released by the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Forty percent of respondents said a faculty supervisor’s assessment of a student’s internship in a real-world setting would be “very useful.” Six percent of respondents noted scores from a multiple choice test would be helpful. The poll builds on a 2006 survey that found business leaders saying 63% of graduates are unprepared for a global economy.

Animal dissections continue to be popular in the high school biology curriculum. NSTA and the National Association of Biology Teachers endorse that practice. However, biology teachers are careful to specify “nonhuman animals.” But dissecting a person is becoming more of a practice in science classrooms. A few high schools across the country have started offering hands-on cadaver-based courses. Universities are offering workshops that give high school students a look into their own anatomy.

Today in Science History

On January 23 in 1857, Yugoslav geologist Andrija Mohorovicic, who discovered the boundary between Earth's outermost crust and its mantle, is born in Volosko, Croatia. The boundary (called the Mohorovicic discontinuity, or simply the "Moho") occurs about 22 miles under continents and just 4.3 miles under oceans. It has never been reached by humans, but a penetration was planned in the 1960s, known as the "Mohole." [from The Illustrated Almanac of Science, Technology, and Invention]
