English version of an interview with Infernus from Newsweek Poland.

- There has been a lot of controversy about Your concert in February 2004 in Krakov. Have You ever experienced similar problems (protests, abusive comments in the press, legal charges) in any other country You have visited during Your career?

No, as a matter of fact this is to the extent it has developed been quite unique. We have of course faced all kinds of hassle during the years out travelling, for instance having members from the special force "del cuerpo de Proteccion a Personalides Importantes" (PPI) to gas the audience at a gig in San Salvador the year after. It was a rather severe riot where people got injured followed by loads of media attention and amongst others negative critizism. Nevertheless, Poland is unique to the degree the public authorities, district attourneys and others, have been involved, and I guess its the only and perhaps last time in modern history a music band are brought before trial on charges of blasphemy. Say, doesn't you have better things to use the taxpayers money on in Poland thesedays?

- Recently Mr. Tomasz Dziubinski from Metal Mind Productions was sentenced for organizing Your concert in Krakov in February 2004 illegaly. Do You also hold him responsible for not seeing to all the formalities? How would You comment on the accusations directed at Mr. Dziubinski? Is it just another sign of lack of tolerance and opression of Satanists?

Hey, I wasnt informed about this. How much did he get? We hold him responsible to the degree we had a lot of work done together that now seemingly will not benefit much any of the parts involved. Morallywise, I hold nothing against him, he is to me only a businesspartner and a producer. I must nevertheless point out that its generally speaking not a bad idea to mind ones steps. You dance with the Devil, you take what comes.

- You claim that your concerts are intended only for Your own audience, therefore, no one should feel offended by Your music. Do You believe in absolute freedom of expression, with no limitations? Should there be no censorship, or are there certain ideologies of hate, like racism, that should never be voiced.

Racism, as you mention as an example, should be fought with reason and cleverness, not censorship. I understand that you have to deal with a certain amount of this as well in Poland. My suggestion, easy and one-dimensional it might seem though, is that you spend the above mentioned taxpayers money on sport activities and cultural arrangements for the kids giving them something proper to do, then perhaps in some magical way or another they won't go off beat some black kid in stead.

- What kind of audience are You playing for? Who are they? What is their age? Surely Satanism is a rather extravagant denomination, and not all Your fans share your beliefs?

Black metal is quite simply Satans music. It's in its essential form music for and by Satanist.

- Should only those fans, that are truly fascinated by Your music be allowed to enter Your concerts? Should it be forbidden for those under 18 to do so?

No, i dont think so.

- Do You warn people who are not Cristians not to participate in Your concerts?

Our whole existence is firmly based upon a big warning telling them that they are on the wrong path, but that there still might be hope.

- The famous calfs' heads on the stage of your 2004 concert are said to represent Christians. You claim that everything in Your music is a symbol. Are You planning any new, even more original and bold stage settings in Your concerts?

Sheeps head, you mean? For even the most illiterate, the sheep does represent flock mentality. Flock mentality has many names, and one of them are Christianity, with its contempt for real power and beauty. Even Jesus from Nasareth was on this the same mission. "My name is Legion, because we are manyfold." As I see it he had as a main mission bringing a message of a new time in which ethical sence would take over for the need of the Torah. What we might be planning or not is not to be made public at the time being. The world is in other words still not a safe place.

- Ghaal - Gorgoroth's guitarists and a former band member - T. Haugen were sentenced for arson and assault respectively. You yourself faced charges of rape. Do You think that such issues add to Your popularity as a black-metal group? Perhaps such charges are a result of an unjust persecution of Satanists or people who sympatize with satanic culture?

I do not think on a general level these incidents brings us to be more popular and liked as persons. Neither am I primarily into this for becoming more a popular guy, my main concern is to make and perform good metal music. In the name of Satan, of course. To a certain degree we are being misunderstood and treated as you say unjust, but that is what comes with and what we have choosed to deal with. In terms of popularity or notorouslyness you Poles, more specifically Metal Mind Productions, the Kracow District Attourney and some other partners in crime, did the Devil the biggest of favours in starting this process and media hystery against us. We never sold as many records or got as much attention as we do now.

- You consider Yourself a Satanist. What does it, in Your opinion, mean to be one?

I am a satanist, yes. It mean that I in a sense see the world differently than common man. I meet people with respect and an open mind, not with morals and pre-judgements. At least this is my ideals. On the contrary of a Christian I openly admit my contempt for weakness, in whatever form it takes upon. And I define many of my "rights" and "wrongs" in a way a Christian would not do.

- Christian thinkers since ancient times deem Satan to be a purely destructive force that is incapable of creating anything new. Satan for Christians is a mock - god, that does not offer any alternative to the real one. How would You argue with those beliefs? Can Satanism, in Your opinion, be a positive, creative and inspiring force in human life?

Satanism should inspire people to do good and to function and develop as much on a high level that is possible. Satanism to me implies a yes-saying to life in itself, and it revolves much around personal development and that of being a good role model for others. You say Christians sees it as no good an alternative. Then why is that? Satanism - goes without saying - is not for common man, as it requests a quest towards another human species, that it is elite by nature and that the goals one set might be regarded as too high achieving. Christians can just have their ideals on the equal value of whoever drugaddict and parasite there is. Satanism in its true sense does however not imply a mockery on the Christian values and a blasphemous assault on their dogmas and rituals. Let them just have it for what I am conserned. History speaks for itself on who is right and who is wrong. Since you set the standard on the discussion to be of a certain generalising level, I will continue accordingly. Is it Satanists or Christians to blame that more than 40.000 women were burned at the stake through europe during the last centuries?

- Does Satanism necessarilly involve violence and hatred of the society? Can Satanists make good neighbors, mothers, fathers, husbands and viwes? Can they be good citizens?

Every man, including a Satanist, ought to make better people. As whoever a person with a certain sence of dignity would probably answer in one way or another. Being a Satanist doesn't necessary make one a worse neighbour etc. It depends upon character and personality, and from a Satanic point of view it thus should. Nevertheless, as a Satanist is not a flock animal, thus defining good and bad in a way that often is not corresponding with civil law, Christian norms and standards or perhaps even common sense, conflicts arise. Then again, who deals with that conlict and on which level?

- Do You sympathize with the church of Satan led by Peter H. Gilmore?

No, Church of Satan is not for me. They had their thing in the late 60's and 70's rebelling and making it more or less accepted what they were up to, practising some easy to identify with and to defend kind of Satanism openly, bringing it into popular culture transcending music and film industry. What appears to me is that they have a lot of fun and circus going on, and thats good for them. Nevertheless, as a Christian have, I also have a concept of a God, and to me Satanism is not only about some 3 rd force psychological development approach, nor some more spicy humanist attempt to get to grips with things.

- Thank You for Your cooperation, and sorry for taking Your time.

Thanx for your time, Michal! It surely makes my day to have a chat with a journalist who is good prepared and has a different focus than blabbering on about how do you tune your guitar et cetera. Best regards and Hail Satan!
