Research Officer�

You will work with Professor Jude Howell on the project on `The Global War against Terror, Non-Governmental Public Action and Development' funded under the ESRC research programme on Nongovernmental Public Action. This is an 18-month post starting from January 2006.

You should have a PhD in a relevant social science such as development studies, international social policy, peace studies, or comparative politics. You should have at least two years experience of working in a developing country, preferably India, Kenya, or Afghanistan. You should have excellent writing, research and analytic skills; be able to work independently, flexibly and to deadlines; be prepared to travel overseas.

We are looking for a Communications Officer to take the lead in disseminating the results of our research by means of written reports, seminars and liaison with development practitioners. In this pivotal role you will work on preparations for the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE) and maintain LSE's publications catalogue on the website. The RAE is vital to the School, with results used for league tables and future funding.

You will collect and record academic publications data for the catalogue and the website ensuring it is correct, up to date and complete. An excellent communicator with an eye for detail, you must also be able to work both fast and accurately and adhere to tight deadlines. Previous experience of similar work in a cataloguing or data management role would be an advantage.

VERSIONS Project
Project & Communications Officer
Salary �25,600 to �32,400 pa incl.
Fixed term contract for 12 months from January 2006

The VERSIONS Project, funded by the JISC and based at the Library of LSE, will develop standards on versions, for use by open access digital repositories when making available author versions of journal articles and other research papers. This is a non-technical role, responsible for both internal and external communication about the project, and for evaluation of economics researchers' needs and their current practices regarding retention of different versions of their own work.

You will be a graduate, or equivalent, probably with qualifications or relevant experience in academic librarianship, publishing or academic administration. Experience of writing reports and user documentation is desirable. Some communications/PR experience would be an advantage. A high level of competence as a user of IT is required, for producing print and online documentation, using survey software and maintaining an attractive project website. You will have initiative, enthusiasm, excellent written communication skills and well-developed analytical skills.

To assist the research director, Dr.P.Boone with analysis of multinational health survey data on the CEP Effective Interventions Project

You will be responsible for helping access, manage, and analyze DHS (Demographic & Health Survey) databases, along with large health surveys from China, in order to better understand differences in child mortality outcomes. You will also work on baseline survey design for several randomized controlled trials in Africa and India related to child mortality

You should have working experience of standard statistical software packages used in economics and health research and be fluent in both English and Mandarin You should have a Masters in Economics, or higher, with a background in statistics; excellent knowledge of computer programming.

The Department of Sociology, together with the External Study Programme, is responsible for co-ordinating the University of London's External Programme BSc Sociology. You write and co-write a set of subject guides on this degree.

You will work in the Department of Sociology, alongside members of the Sociology Department and related departments, to produce syllabuses and materials for the External Programme. You will also act as the representative for the Department in the Committees responsible for the development of the External Programme.

You should have a completed or nearly completed a PhD in a relevant field and have significant experience of teaching at an undergraduate level and of writing learning materials. Your writing will concentrate mainly in the areas of historical sociology and social theory. It will be an advantage to have an understanding of the needs of distance learning students.
