We will move fast. Once you submit your application, you may have to take an assessment. We will evaluate your experience and training, identify the best qualified applicants, and refer those applications to the appropriate hiring managers for further consideration and possible interviews. We will notify you of the outcome after each of these steps has been completed. In addition, your status will be updated on your USAJOBS account throughout the process.

Does USCIS have upcoming job fairs?

Yes! Watch this space for dates and details!

What characteristics is USCIS looking for?

USCIS is dedicated to strengthening and upholding the integrity of America’s immigration system, and we invite you to join us in this important mission. Every day, we work to administer the nation’s lawful immigration system while safeguarding the country from fraud, security threats, and risks to public safety.

We are looking for talented and dedicated individuals to fill key positions nationwide. Be a part of our team to help defend the homeland and shape the future of our nation.

How long will I have to wait?

We have cut the bureaucratic red tape and can make on-the-spot job offers at upcoming job fairs. USCIS will be able to conduct real-time hiring using our Direct Hiring Authority (DHA). DHA permits USCIS to fill critical positions with highly qualified candidates without the need to use the traditional hiring process. Job announcements indicate Direct Hiring Authority.

DHA:

  • Expedites the hiring process by allowing agencies to select any qualified applicant without competitive rating and ranking procedures, after public notice is given (veterans’ preference does not apply under DHA);
  • Allows federal agencies to address critical hiring needs or severe shortages of candidates when granted by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM);
  • Enables agencies to appoint candidates directly into competitive service career, career-conditional, term, and temporary positions; and
  • Ensures applicants still meet basic minimum qualifications regarding experience, education, or a combination of the two.

USCIS Direct Hire Authority Positions

  • Fraud Detection and National Security (FDNS)
    • Immigration Officer: Conduct extensive inquiries and detailed research and analysis and liaise with law enforcement organizations and intelligence agencies to investigate allegations of potential fraud; address national security concerns and combat public safety threats within the immigration system.
  • Field Operations Directorate (FOD) and Service Center Operations (SCOPS) Directorate
    • Homeland Defender (Immigration Services Officer): Grant or deny immigration applications and petitions efficiently and fairly and help other federal agencies identify individuals who pose a threat to national security and public safety.
    • Supervisory Immigration Services Officer: Make case determinations, hear and adjudicate appeals, and make decisions on reopening or reconsidering immigration cases. Provide technical and administrative advice to staff who examine applications and petitions for immigration benefits. Assign and plan work for subordinates.
    • Immigration Services Assistant (Office Automation): Support the adjudication process by conducting security checks, supporting officers, managing correspondence, maintaining customer support, processing documents and fees, and analyzing files, reports, and information systems or databases.

Can recent graduates with minimal experience apply?

Yes. Recent graduates who, within the past two years, have completed a qualifying associate, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate can apply.
