Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule expects more from offensive line

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon. Rhule was asked about the performance of his offensive line in the Huskers 24-6 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The line surrendered nine sacks in the loss and the head coach was adamant that the Huskers performance was not good enough.

“Nine sacks is not good enough. I think three were on the running back. It’s just all around. The ball needs to get out faster, we have to protect better, backs have to step up and win the one on one, but if you’re an offensive linemen you can't give up nine sacks.”“Nine sacks is not good enough. The head coach also said that he expects his players to step up and respond following the dismal showing against the Golden Gophers.

“It’s just not good enough at all and that rests on my shoulders. If the players are who they say they are, which I believe they are, then that rests on their shoulders too. One of the last sacks was empty protection where the back has to get out and the back didn’t hear the protection so that was a miss assignment just of audibly hearing it. Our guys know what to do. We’re not fooled. They were blitzing the back and bringing the guy that has the back in man across; the same thing Iowa did last year and in Boston College we were flipping the protection into it so we didn’t play nearly good enough. We have all the tools to handle that and we just didn’t do it.”

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-2, 2-2) retake the field on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they host the Northwestern Wildcats at Memorial Stadium. The kickoff time is set for 11 a.m. CT and can be seen on FS1.
