Isgubhu, a Zulu word meaning “beat”, celebrates an evergreen and ever-growing set of dance and electronic genres and sub-genres sweeping the continent, from amapiano, gqom and Afro-house to kwaito, Shangaan electro and more. This week, the playlist features the curation of Thakzin, the DJ and producer whose expansive Gods window, Pt. 1 has been making waves since its release this September. Having included songs like Kabza De Small & MDU aka TRP’s “Lawuleka” and Earful Soul, Poizen and Kabza collab, “You Can Win”, alongside his latest album’s “Hamba Nami”, the DJ’s curation is overtly about keeping the good times rolling. “‘Hamba Nami’ is about a guy who doesn’t want to get bored,” Thakzin says. “He wants to encourage people to go with him on holiday, to Zimbali or Ballito, not to stay in one place. [He] just wants to go out and have fun.” Hear “Hamba Nami” and the rest of Thakzin’s selections now on the Isgubhu playlist and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
