Afrobeats Hits

Born in Nigeria and Ghana, Afrobeats has become one of the most eclectic—and exportable—sounds in contemporary music, often incorporating everything from rap and dancehall to R&B and house. At the top of the playlist this week is “Who’s Dat Girl”, a track that brings together Nigerian superstars Ayra Starr and Rema. The sizzling dancehall anthem represents Starr ticking off an item on a very exclusive list she keeps. Back in August, when Apple Music Radio’s Rebecca Judd asked her who her dream collaborators would be, she said, “I always say different people, but it depends on who I’m listening to at that time. So three people that I always say that I’m never going to change: Rihanna, of course; Kendrick Lamar, of course; and there’s Rema. My three non-negotiables. I don’t play.” Pressed on the imminent possibility of a linkup with Rema, Starr said, “It has to be great. It has to be good. And I have to wait for the best time.” Looks like that time is now. Hear “Who’s Dat Girl” on Afrobeats Hits, alongside the rest of the infectious if indefinable sound of 21st-century Africa. We regularly refresh this playlist, so if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
