The pan-Africanist ideal never died—it morphed into hybridised sonic fragments that connect Joburg to Nairobi via Lagos and Accra. One of our favourite torchbearers of the continent’s far-reaching musical ingenuity is Akwa-Ibom-born, Lagos-raised DJ Emeezy. Currently serving as tour DJ for Afrobeats superstar BNXN, Emeezy has been absorbing and also dictating the way crowds across the globe are engaging with African music. “African music keeps evolving by blending tradition with fresh global influences, and Afrobeats continues to break boundaries with sounds from the Caribbean, UK, amapiano, Afro-house and beyond,” Emeezy says. “Being BNXN’s official DJ has given me a front-row seat to how fast Afrobeats is moving and transforming.” For his Africa Now mix, Emeezy aimed to t “bring together some of the most powerful voices and sounds in Nigeria right now,” while including selections that “reflect the energy of the streets, the clubs, and the moments that connect people everywhere.” Hear Emeezy’s vision of Africa Now and check back each month for more one-of-a-kind mixes.
