Plasmids are mobile genetic elements that are tightly involved in the ecology and evolution of bacteria and archaea. They act as vectors for horizontal gene transfer, allowing them to mobilize accessory genes and expand the ecological niche of their hosts by conferring new metabolic capabilities and resistance to toxic compounds. Furthermore, plasmids have a wide range of applications in biotechnology and health, making them a subject of great interest in both academic and industrial research.
IMG/PR serves as a community plasmid resource, comprising the largest public collection of plasmid sequences identified from genomes, SAGs, MAGs, metagenomes and metatranscriptomes. It provides users with rich metadata to explore the functional and ecological landscape of plasmids, making it a valuable tool for the plasmid research community.
