Le son [] en phonétique française est une voyelle orale postérieure ouverte non

• Postérieure : la langue est placée vers l’arrière de la bouche.
Ouverte : la bouche est bien ouverte.
• Non arrondie : les lèvres restent détendues, non arrondies.
The sound [ ] in French phonetics is an open back unrounded oral vowel.
ɑ
• Oral vowel: the air passes only through the mouth (no nasalization).
• Back: the tongue is positioned towards the back of the mouth.
• Open: the mouth is wide open.
• Unrounded: the lips remain relaxed, not rounded.
Specific variations
15.
For instance, thedifference between the two French sounds "a" ([a] as in "un chat") and
"â" ([ ] as in "des pâtes") is called a vowel quality difference, specifically a difference in
ɑ
vowel height and backness.
Technical Terms:
• [a] (as in chat) is a front open (low) unrounded vowel.
• [ ] (as in
ɑ pâte) is a back open (low) unrounded vowel.

Combination of vowels
InFrench like in English, some vowels will combine in writing to make a sound, like
in A and Y in “May” / the A and I in “mai”.
Once you learn the pronunciation of a particular vowel combination, it is generally
consistent across different words, which aids in reading and pronunciation.

Les accents français:e é è
Each accent on "e" signals a specific vowel sound, making it possible to know
exactly how to pronounce a word. Accents can completely change the meaning of
a word. For example, "une ferme" (farm) and "fermé" (closed) differ only by the
accent; but have unrelated meanings. Omitting an accent can lead to
misunderstandings or even change the word entirely. Some accents, like the
circumflex (ê), often indicate a historical change in the word, such as a lost "s"
(e.g., "la forêt" from "forest").

The Silent Hin French
In French, the letter H is always silent—it is never pronounced as in English. However,
there are two types of silent H:
• H muet (mute H): Acts as if it isn’t there at all. Words beginning with H muet allow for
liaisons (linking sounds between words) and elisions (dropping the vowel in articles like
"le" or "la" to form "l’"). For example, "l’homme" (the man) and "les hommes" (the men)
are pronounced as if the H is absent
• H aspiré (aspirated H): Still silent, but it blocks liaison and elision. This means you do
not link the preceding word or contract the article.
For example, "le hibou" (the owl) and "les hiboux" are pronounced with a clear break,
and you do not contract with an apostrophe and say "l’hibou" but "le hibou".
Despite the name, the "aspirated H" is not pronounced or "breathed out"—it just acts as
a barrier to linking and contraction.

The "TH" inFrench
In French, the letter combination "th" is always pronounced as a simple [t] sound, never
as the English "th" (as in "think" or "this"). The H is ignored completely, and the tongue
does not go between the teeth.
For example:
• " Du thé" (tea) is pronounced [te], like "tay"
• "athlétique" (athletic) is pronounced with a [t], not [θ] or [ð]
• "sympathique" (nice) and "Édith" (Edith) follow the same rule
French speakers learning English often find the English "th" difficult, as it does not exist
in French phonology

language classroom. It can be printed or recreated using
various recycled art supplies.
It is essential to include the pupils in the creation of the
tree.
Once the tree is displayed, the pupils should be given
opportunities to add leaves, buds, and flowers to the
tree.
On the French phonics tree, the teacher has to decide
which group (vowel or consonant) they want to focus on
or which vowel sound their pupils need to focus on. The
teacher can also use a colour coding system. Each time
a pupil learns a new word that is complex to pronounce,
they can identify which sound the word contains. Then
they can volunteer to add the items to the tree.
