Inside Out was the big winner at the 43rd Annie Awards, which honor the year’s achievements in animation. Going into the awards, Inside Out led with 14 nominations, more than any other film, and it won in 10 categories, including best animated feature. Peter Docter also won for best director and outstanding achievement in writing (with Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley), and Phyllis Smith, who voices Sadness, was recognized for outstanding achievement in voice acting. Pixar’s other 2015 release, The Good Dinosaur, also earned an award for outstanding achievement in animated effects. Other big winners include Avengers: Age of Ultron, which picked up an award for animated effects in a live action production for its Sokovia destruction scene, and The Revenant, which earned outstanding character animation in a live action production for the bear that mauls Leonardo DiCaprio. (Her name is Judy.) This was also the first year that ASIFA-Hollywood honored the best animated independent feature, giving the inaugural award to Boy and the World. Ale Abreu’s Brazilian film is also up for the best animated feature film at this year’s Oscars, competing against Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, Anomalisa, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and When Marnie Was There. On the TV side of things, Bob’s Burgers picked up one award for writing and one for Kristen Schaal for voice acting, and The Simpsons’ “Halloween of Horror” episode earned best general audience animated TV/broadcast production.
