PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's daily percent positivity rate dipped below 1 percent Wednesday, according to the latest date from the Rhode Island Department of Health.

The state had a "banner day" for tests Wednesday, Gov. Gina Raimondo said, with nearly 8,500 tests conducted. Rhode Island has made vast improvements in the past few weeks, she said.

After the July 4 holiday, Rhode Island saw an uptick in coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and percent positivity rate. As a result, more safety measures were put in place, including lowering the social gathering limit to 15 people from 25, continuing to ramp up testing and urging the public to following social distancing guidelines.

"The results are clear, Raimondo said, reminding Rhode Islanders to avoid large social gatherings during Labor Day weekend. "Keep it small. Don't congregate, wear your mask and keep social distance."

On Thursday, the Rhode Island Department of Health reported 56 new cases and four additional deaths.
