A tribute to Robert Simson on the occasion of the tercentenary of his birth

Editorial note. This paper was accepted by Professor Whiteside in October, 1987, approximately the tercentenary of Robert Simson's birth. Then, it seems, the original manuscript was lost in transit to the Editor, and only after much time had passed was the need for a duplicate perceived.
