Russia–Ukraine War and India’s Foreign Policy Behavior: Implications for International Migration

Handbook of Migration, International Relations and Security in Asia

Abstract

The Russia–Ukraine war has exacerbated geopolitical tensions and prompted India to adopt a cautious foreign policy stance. As India carefully manages its diplomatic approach, the implications for international migration become significant as global migration patterns may change. In this chapter, India’s foreign policy behavior in the context of the Russia–Ukraine war is analyzed in a comprehensive study. It examines the complex interplay of historical alliances, economic interests, and the principles of non-alignment that have shaped India’s response. With the aim of answering the question of why and how democracies sometimes behave differently, this study analyzed India in the context of the Russia–Ukraine war. The findings show that while India, as the largest democracy, did not speak up by holding back on all the United Nations General Assembly resolutions in a particular context, it did not curtail its diplomatic initiatives to support and provide aid to “Ukraine,” a functioning democracy. India has taken each of its steps very consciously, prioritizing its “foreign policy” principles without compromising national interests and security in a complex world order. This article contributes to the academic discourse on India’s foreign policy, the dynamics of global geopolitics, and the evolving nature of non-alignment.
