What is file size limit for Notepad in Windows XP?

    Hi all.

Ok, I admit 616MB is quite large for a text file. But I thought I had opened larger ones than this in the past. When I try to open this one I'm getting "The xxx file is too large for Notepad. Use another editor to edit the file.".

I'm pretty sure there's no garbage in the file which might upset Notepad, and it can't be a case of too many lines or similar, as it complains almost instantly.

So, can anyone point me to any info about specific limits? I tried searching MSDN without any luck (unless the limit is still 64KB), and searching the web (as is often the case) returned too many entries and I can't spend all day sitting around reading through them.

Hm... actually, I thought it was just limited by available RAM these days. But I've got at least 1½GB available, so even if it's stupidly using Unicode, shouldn't it still fit?

I'm not sure the max size, but I do know that I opened a 300MB logfile with it a few months ago. Then again, it did take an extremely long time to load...

in 2000, it was listed by this guy as 32MB.

There are tons of "notepad replacement"s out there. I like notepad++, but it's slow on large files, as it does syntax highlighting (might work fine on text, though).

One way to cut down the startup time is to make sure you're not starting up with word-wrap turned on. Wrapping seems very slow.
