For nearly two centuries, the Associated Press has been there when it matters most, from the American Civil War to today's global conflicts.
How we do it: Journalists in over 250 locations worldwide, delivering firsthand accounts as events unfold. We don’t have corporate owners or billionaire backers, just rigorous journalism that's earned us 59 Pulitzer Prizes and counting.
Why it works: More than half the planet sees AP journalism every day because readers like you believe accurate reporting makes the world better equipped to face the challenges we share.
The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Through more than 175 years of social, political and technological change, AP has been the only global news organization that operates as an independent not-for-profit. We reinvest every dollar we make into the work we do and we don’t have owners, investors or government oversight. We are governed by the AP Executive Leadership Team and the AP Board of Directors, who provides guidance according to AP bylaws.
AP journalists – reporters, photographers, video journalists, editors and more – work on the ground in nearly 250 locations in about 100 countries. Thanks to this global network ofteams who meet around the clock and across time zones, news is always being gathered and distributed through photos, video and articles every single day.
Since its founding in 1846, AP has always been a news cooperative, providing its journalism to news organizations who license it for their own outlets.
In 2023, AP relaunched its own website, with no paywall or subscription, allowing consumers to access AP journalism directly.
This approach allows AP to continue its mission to expand the reach of accurate, fact-based, nonpartisan reporting while building a sustainable future for independent journalism powered, in part, by readers who choose to support our mission.
The Associated Press sets the industry standard for ethics in journalism. The bedrock of our work is our News Values and Principles, a set of policies and practices that ensure AP stories are accurate, nonpartisan and based in fact.
Our standards team is charged with ensuring that AP journalism meets a high bar every day. This group of highly experienced editors reviews material before and after publication, creates guidance for reporters and editors and provides staff training. Other media organizations often follow AP’s lead.
AP is an independent, not-for-profit news cooperative whose revenue is predominantly generated by licensing its journalism to other news organizations and customers. As a not-for-profit, every dollar we earn is reinvested into our ability to produce journalism. We are also funded by advertising on our website and by readers like you who donate. You can learn more about our business in our annual report.
As a fact-based, nonpartisan news organization, our mission is to produce factual journalism, not offer opinion.
