Sarmatian ICBM & FOBS Reintroduction

This new Sarmatian heavy missile has been assigned the not just the standard MIRV/ICBM tasks "but also the delivery of warheads and strike a variety of ways, including through the delivery units South Pole" according to Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences, Former head of the 4th. Central Research Institute of the Defense Ministry, Major General Vladimir Vasilenko on or about February 27, 2014 and again March 17, 2014. To achieve such a southern variant reentry would require a FOBS (fractional orbital bombardment systems operation) operational capability that is much more precise than previous SS-9 based R-36-0 testing demonstrated in the 1960-1970s. In fact if this is correct some of the existing SS-18's may in fact already be assigned FOBS operational capability though this remains uncertain.

The United States is building a missile defense system in Europe to protect against possible attack from rogue states such as Iran. Karakayev said Iran has neither technology nor industrial potential to build ballistic missiles. There have been media reports about test launches of Iranian intercontinental ballistic missiles but the SMF doubts these missiles will have the effective range to reach Europe, he said.

Russia will only be able to adopt a new 100-ton liquid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) intended to penetrate the US missile defense system by 2022, the manufacturer said on 08 May 2012. Russian military mentioned the possibility of the new ICBMs in 2009 but the official decision to launch development of the new silo-based missile designed to replace the Voyevoda R-36M2 Satan ICBM was only announced late in 2011. Statistics says it will take about ten years, said Andrei Goryaev, deputy director of the Russian missile maker NPO Mashinostroyeniya. He said it was hard to make any forecasts about the timeframe. If the country has not done it for 30 years then difficulties are inevitable, he said.

Russia will build a new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile by 2018, Strategic Missile Forces commander Col. Gen. Sergei Karakayev said on 03 September 2012. Construction of the missile is ongoing, he said. It is to be completed by 2018.

Russia will begin construction of a prototype of a heavy liquid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in 2014, a Defense Ministry source said 18 June 2013. The construction of a full-size testing prototypes of this missile will begin next year, the source said, adding that the design of the missile was approved in 2012. So far all of Russias recent ICBM projects, both sea-launched (Bulava) and ground-based (Topol-M, Yars), have been solid-propellant. The Sarmatian missile technical requirements were approved during the 2011 through to final approval in October 2012 period, while its electronics flight avionics were design mocked up and developed during 2012. In general the program appears to have been planned over three five year plans starting in the middle of the 2006-2010 FYP extending through the 2016-2020 and 2021-2025 FYP's.

Russia's Strategic Missile Forces commander Col. Gen. Sergei Karakayev said in 2012 that the new ICBM would have a launch mass of about 100 tons with a better payload-to-launch-weight ratio than in a solid-fuel missile. As a result, the missile would carry more powerful warheads, including MIRVs with decoy elements. Combined with advanced ICBM targeting system, which was being developed in Russia, the missile will be able to penetrate the most sophisticated missile defenses anywhere in the world, Russian experts and officials believe.

All SS-18’s,Voyevoda, ICBM’s are expected to be replaced by the new in R&D follow-on SS-X-??(30?) heavy storable highly toxic liquid propellant, ten warheads MIRV’ed ICBM by 2026 according to the present schedule. Design wise this100 ton missile two stages plus Bus/PBV third stage and payload envelop must remain within the treaty confined design requirements. It must utilize existing improved propulsion systems with a more modern long life material and systems durability requirements. This challenging task assigned to NPO Mashinostroyeniyais with its 2012 approved design that has been scale model dynamically tested will not only have to duplicate the SS-18 technology and manufacturing capability it will also have to improve on that to higher standards than the Soviet era requirements. Inevitably the design details will reflect the NPO Mashinostroyeniyais experience base over that which was characteristic of Ukraine's Yuzhnoy design bureau experience base that designed the SS-18 (Satan) ICBM.

Russia will deploy its new silo-based heavy ballistic Sarmat missiles in the Orenburg Region and Krasnoyarsk Territory, Strategic Missile Forces Commander Col.Gen. Sergei Karakayev said 25 December 2014. This heavy rocket will be deployed in Uzhur [in the Krasnoyarsk Territory] and the village of Dombarovsky [in the Oregnburg Region], Karakayev said.
