Advancing Science and Medicine Through Discovery

Yale School of Medicine advances science and medicine through discovery, in the laboratory and at the bedside and by attracting and nurturing future leaders. We do this by cultivating a dynamic, inclusive community focused on excellence that promotes curiosity and critical inquiry in an environment of scientific rigor.

We are applying advanced methods of research to better understand the complex mysteries of human biology, with an emphasis on creativity, discipline and teamwork, both within Yale School of Medicine and also across the Yale community, and in collaboration with other research institutions.

Through Team science, we bring together different perspectives. The interplay of those disciplines often leads to a reframing of a problem and to creativity.

The translation in translational research is bidirectional, observations in patients drive discoveries in the laboratory, and breakthroughs in research impact human health through clinical trials that ensure safety and efficacy of new therapies, with the goal of promoting health, treating disease, and saving lives.

As we understand the underpinnings of disease, we begin to understand why individual patients develop specific diseases and why these patients respond differently to therapies. This allows us to tailor therapy at the individual and the population level.

To ensure continued innovation and progress, we teach our students how to learn and reason and to value curiosity. This is the philosophy of the Yale System.

We seek collaboration across the university to advance our missions. We also partner with our community of New Haven, the region, and the world to listen and to learn through curiosity and critical inquiry.

Together with Yale New Haven Health, we care for individual patients and also aim to improve the health of all in our region around the country and around the world.

This is the mission of the Yale School of Medicine.
