Responsibilities See More DGT’s key role is to enable the Commission to work in all official EU languages when: proposing legislationissuing and implementing its official decisionsinforming the public about its work It also supports innovation in language technologies and promotes multilingualism. Translation DGT supports the Commission’s decision-making by translating EU legislation, policy documents, communications and other legal and nonlegal written texts from and into the 24 official EU languages, and others when needed. DGT helps the Commission to make information available to people in language they understand. This makes the EU more open, accountable and democratic.Clear writing DGT edits documents written by Commission authors and advises Commission departments on how to write clear, correct and concise texts, thus making EU policies easier for people to understand. Terminology DGT manages, curates and re-uses the high-quality linguistic data it builds up in the course of its work, in the form of translation memories, translated documents and terminology records (e.g. IATE - Interactive Terminology for Europe). It also explores increasingly intelligent and efficient ways of using and sharing such data.Language technology DGT develops secure multilingual services based on AI, such as eTranslation, eSummary and Accessible Text, and makes them available not just to the EU institutions but also, EU-wide, to public administrations, academia, small businesses, NGOs and other bodies. It also invests in training large language models (LLM) to improve our services and products.Language skills DGT runs a range of outreach projects, including the European Day of Languages and the Juvenes Translatores contest, targeting different audiences to promote linguistic diversity in the EU, language learning and language skills.Supporting the language professions DGT provides resources for professional linguists (translators, interpreters, etc.) EU-wide and helps them refine their skills through initiatives like the European Master's in Translation, Translating Europe and the Knowledge Centre on Translation and Interpretation (KCTI). TransparencyAs part of the Commission's commitment to transparency, Commission staff holding management functions publish information on and minutes of all meetings they hold with interest representatives.Meetings of the Directorate-General for Translation Leadership and organisation Commissioner Piotr Serafin Director-General Christos Ellinides 15 MAY 2025Translation - Organisation chartOther languages (1)français(298.16 KB - PDF)Download Search for staff Contact Show contact detailsDirectorate-General for Translation - LuxembourgNameDirectorate-General for Translation - LuxembourgPostal addressT2 building 1-7 Boulevard Pierre Frieden 2920 Luxembourg Luxembourg Press contactsDG Translation - Local officesDirectorate-General for Translation - BrusselsNameDirectorate-General for Translation - BrusselsPhone number+32 2 299 11 11 (Commission switchboard)Postal addressEuropean Commission 1049 Bruxelles/Brussel Belgium OfficeJ59Social mediaXInstagramFacebookYouTubeLinkedIn Related links Translation at the EU institutionsJuvenes Translatores contestDG Translation - Local officesEuropean Master's in TranslationKnowledge Centre on Translation and InterpretationTranslating Europe Forum & workshopsTranslation and drafting resourcesClear writing for EuropePublications on translation and languageVisiting translator scheme (VTS)Language Industry Expert Group (LIND)eTranslationTenders and contractsAI-Based Multilingual ServicesEuropean Day of Languages Plans and reports Commission work programmeThe Commission work programme sets out a plan of action for the next 12 months.
