Thermodynamic AI and the fluctuation frontier
Many Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms are inspired by physics and employ stochastic fluctuations. We connect these physics-inspired AI algorithms by unifying them under a single...

Quantum Computing Community: My best analogy for explaining exponential scaling to media & non-scientists is this. When you’re a kid, they teach you that you can’t fold a piece of paper in half more than 7 times…

Congrats to our students @samson_wang,@EnricoFontana19 for discovering a new phenomenon, in the first paper of our 2020 school. We prove that local Pauli noise if strong enough will cause a barren plateau in cost landscape. Deep ansatzes are untrainable. scirate.com/arxiv/2007.143…

New paper for a new decade! We have bad & good news for variational algorithms (VAs). Bad: VAs with global cost functions have barren plateaus even for shallow depth. Good: VAs with local cost functions (e.g. VQE) have large gradients up to O(log n) depth. scirate.com/arxiv/2001.005…

A vaccine makes you immune to a virus. Likewise, training a circuit in the presence of a device-specific noise model makes the circuit immune to that device’s noise. This is Noise-Aware Circuit Learning (NACL). Joint work w/ L.Cincio, K.Rudinger, M.Sarovar scirate.com/arxiv/2007.012…

New method for error mitigation. (1) Generate training data via classically simulable circuits. (2) Learn to correct noise on training data (3) Use the fitted model to remove noise from any circuit. Joint work with P.Czarnik, @AndrewArrasmit2, L.Cincio. scirate.com/arxiv/2005.101…

My research used to focus on the uncertainty principle, and my (always funny) dad would joke “You’re still uncertain about the uncertainty principle?” Now here’s an article on my recent research called “The Advantage of Uncertainty”, for a broad audience. lanl.gov/discover/publi…
