X is a phrase that was seen as early as the 1750s and was popularized in movies
about the old west or ‘Westerns,’ where cowboys or Indians were shot or thrown
from their horses to land on the dusty ground, which precisely explains the
meaning of the phrase X.
X is also the name of the ability of the antagonist (Y) in the 3rd season of an
anime series aired in 2016. X is born from Y's desire to prevent anyone from
knowing his true identity. Whenever there is a risk of Y’s identity being revealed,
X activates and prevents Y’s identity from being revealed by killing the person
and rewinds time prior to detonation.

working at. He said he was inspired by the lack of the ability to communicate
even though the person was of the same species, and thought at that moment
that the most familiar and scary animal in the world is actually the human.

Xs, on the other hand, are seen as a step up from regular television production.
Because the production house need not adhere to the rapid-ﬁre schedule or
constrained budget of a TV series, more effort and care can be applied to an X,
resulting in a much higher level of quality.

In the 4Kids English dub versions of an anime, X’s name was changed to ____, to
avoid the copyright issue between a ﬁctional swordsman Don Diego de La Vega.
The gap between the ﬁrst appearance of both the characters is about 80 years.

the name of X. The name change is backed up by the fact that both the changed
letters have a similar Japanese pronunciation, and hence it didn’t cause much

While coming up with a name for his manga/anime, the mangaka, decided to call
his work _____, since most of the characters used guns. But later, he realized
swords would be better than guns and because of this, he couldn’t use _____ as a
title anymore.
He began looking for a title that grasped the bigger picture and thought of calling
it a color X since it was associated with the plot element that was inspired by a
traditional Japanese god. He felt this was too simple a title and so was that color’s
inversion Y. So, ﬁnally the mangaka chose the current name to evoke the
impression of Y.
