Hi! I'm Matt Godbolt, creator of Compiler Explorer. Compiler Explorer is an open source website that lets you explore how your C, C++, D, Fortran, Go, Rust, Ispc, Haskell, Swift, Pascal, Nim, Zig and many other languages compile down to the machine code your computer actually runs. It's a great way to learn assembly, understand compiler behavior, explore optimization opportunities, and test assumptions about what makes code efficient. Compiler Explorer has been my labour of love since May 2012. I self-funded the AWS compute resources until January 2017, when I set up this Patreon. Your pledges help cover the hosting bills and support ongoing development. I'm committed to keeping Compiler Explorer free and open source for everyone. If you find it useful and want to help keep it running, I'd love your support. Since I want it free for all, there aren't patron-only features – you're supporting the community resource itself. Depending on your patronage level, I'll send some stickers or other goodies, but the site remains the same for everyone. You can support Compiler Explorer by becoming a patron here, sponsoring me on GitHub, donating via PayPal, or buying merchandise from the online shop. Costs breakdown Compiler Explorer runs on 6-40 AWS instances depending on load, plus instances for building compilers, administration, staging and beta environments. Monthly instance costs run about $2200. The load balancer (needed for scalability and rolling updates) adds $40/month. CloudFront CDN and DDoS protection: $200. S3 storage for compiler binaries: $4000. Papertrail for log management and alerting: $50. Sentry.io for error tracking: $40. Plus annual costs for domains and certificates. Total monthly costs: roughly $3,500. (Costs correct of August 2025)
