Kaia String Quartet & Fareed Haque with art by Margie Criner
Kaia String Quartet & Fareed Haque with art by Margie Criner
Kaia String Quartet + Fareed Haque This Valentine’s week, we are turning up the romance with a concert that feels like a love letter in sound. The Kaia String Quartet joins forces with the brilliant guitarist Fareed Haque for an evening that blends passion, virtuosity, and pure joy. At the heart of the program is Haque’s own Quintet for Guitar and Strings, Op. 60, a piece that showcases his signature blend of lyricism and fire. The journey continues with music by Latin American icons Ricardo Lorenz and Astor Piazzolla, whose tangos are equal parts smoldering and tender. Eduardo Angulo’s El Alevín (The Minnow) adds playful sparkle to the mix, proof that even the smallest notes can carry big emotion. Margie Criner Sculptor The night’s visual counterpart is sculptor Margie Criner. From a distance, her works appear sleek and abstract, but each piece hides a lens portal that reveals an entire miniature world inside. These tiny universes explore themes of waiting, traveling, commuting, and dreaming—moments we all share yet rarely stop to notice. Criner’s art bridges design, play, and discovery, inviting viewers to pause, peer closer, and uncover stories hidden in plain sight. Music that speaks in thousands of notes. Art that asks you to look twice and see more. It’s the kind of Valentine you’ll remember long after the last chord fades. 💖
Pop-Up Ride to Northerly Island
Pop-Up Ride to Northerly Island
Supposed to pop-up to 45F on Saturday... anyone want to dust off the bike for a fun "pre-season" ride? Idea would be to ride from the north side down to Northerly Island, to see this less well-known Chicago nature preserve (thanks Mayor Daley, and who needed Meigs Field anyway?), taking the trail onto the island, stopping to enjoy the views, and heading back north. If there is interest, we may stop at Navy Pier for food so consider bringing a lock & some money. Look for parking on Simonds Dr near Lawrence Av (just E of Lake Shore Drive), then meet where Lakefront Trail crosses Lawrence (same Lawrence & Simonds intersection). Allow for traffic if driving into the city as it can get busy this time of day. Exact details TBD depending who shows up, but likely a 15-20 mi loop. If we have lots of folks we can consider multiple groups by speed, if not, my typical pace is about 10-12 mph, and we won't leave anyone behind so it could vary a little off that at points. As always, rides are subject to change, so watch Meetup for updates! Other reminders: HELMET IS MANDATORY. As is a properly maintained bike. No earbuds, earphones, or speakers please. Also recommend you carry (1) photo ID, emergency contact info & insurance card, (2) spare tube & pump/CO2 (3) water bottle. Of course dress for weather (sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, rain poncho, etc). While this is a daylight ride, headlight and taillight are recommended to make you more visible. NOTE: All riders participate at their own risk. Neither Meetup.com nor Let's Ride organizers are responsible for your safety or enjoyment on this ride.

Manga Discussion: (Reprint) - A Drifting Life
*This is only 1 (very large) volume in English at least.* *A Drifting Life* known in Japan as 「劇画漂流」is an autobiographical manga by Yoshihiro Tatsumi 「辰巳 ヨシヒロ」about how he and a group of like minded artists started "Gekiga" or Japan's equivalent to "Graphic Novels" with Manga meaning "Frivolous pictures" and Gekiga meaning "Dramatic Imagery". The manga was published in the US with the help of Indie American cartoonist Adrian Tomine who cited an odd Tatsumi work that was published back in the 1980s as an inspiration to his work. Animechicago actually read this selection over a decade ago and decided to give it a revisit thanks to the new edition and many new members... The Manga a partial autobiography about Yoshiharu Tatsumi who in this work assumes a pseudonym Hiroshi Katsumi. The manga chronicles how "Katsumi" got interested in creating manga (including a very interesting cameo from Osamu Tezuka), and how he wound up developing manga aimed at older readers and experimenting with the form culminating in him and like minded artists drafting a "Gekiga Manifesto". While the work he did started as hard boiled crime thrillers pulled from classic film noir movies, it would later through the work of many other artists inspired by this manifesto lead to a broad based adoption of manga as a popular pastime for people of all ages in Japan! **★★★ IF LOGGING IN - [SETUP DISCORD](https://animechicago.com/discord) BEFORE EVENT ★★★** DISCORD LINK: https://discord.gg/KMtNz4P (Please show up in person if you can!)
