2/15 @ 1PM - Sunday Games at Sketchbook Evanston
Join us at Sketchbook Brewing Company in Evanston for our Sunday Board Game Meetup!
We meet most Sundays at Sketchbook. Just look for the group in the back that has stacks of board games to pick from! We welcome people of all skill levels to come and play, as we always teach new games to people that have not played them before.
Feel free to bring your own games that you want to teach and are familiar with. A typical event starts with talking about what we brought that week, and then we break out into smaller groups to play games based on player count and what everyone is interested in. It's common to have 2 or 3 games going at once, and fitting in a second or third game before the event ends at 4pm. Please RSVP and be on time so that we can include you at the start of the first game, and buy a drink to support the venue!

đ **About St. Barbara Roman Catholic Church**
Founded in **1910**, **St. Barbara Parish** was established to serve Polish immigrants who settled near Chicagoâs booming industrial corridor of rail yards, factories, and stockyards. Named for **St. Barbara**, patron saint of miners and workers in dangerous trades, the parish became a spiritual refuge for laboring families seeking faith, stability, and community.
The current church building, completed in the **1910s**, is a stunning example of the **Polish Cathedral style** â a uniquely American expression of Catholic architecture characterized by monumental scale, classical influences, lavish ornamentation, and an emphasis on beauty as an act of devotion.
Inside, the church is richly adorned with:
* Grand altars
* Painted ceilings and murals
* Sculptural details
* Stained glass honoring saints, sacraments, and Polish religious heritage
Every element was designed to inspire awe, reinforce Catholic teaching, and reflect the pride and sacrifice of the immigrant community that built it.
For generations, St. Barbara served as a cultural, spiritual, and social anchor â hosting baptisms, weddings, funerals, festivals, and daily worship that shaped neighborhood life. As demographics evolved, the parish continued to adapt while preserving its extraordinary artistic and architectural legacy.
Today, St. Barbara remains an active parish and a treasured landmark â one of Chicagoâs most impressive examples of early 20th-century Catholic church design.

**Trial in the Delta: the Murder of Emmett Till**
đś About the Production
On September 20, 1955, testimony began in the murder trial of two members of Emmett Tillâs lynch mob. What happened during that trial â and in the weeks and months surrounding it â would help ignite the Civil Rights Movement.
Written by Willie Round & G. Riley Mills, directed by Anthony Moseley & Dana Anderson, this production is drawn directly from The State of Mississippi vs. Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam trial transcript. It plays as a live courtroom reenactment, featuring top Chicago actors seated among the audience.
Join us as we witness this vital story â and stay to discuss its impact and legacy.

Mardi Gras Walk (ORLEANS, Hudson, Franklin)
Three, three, three streets in one!
We'll meet at[ Deko Cafe](https://cafedeko.com/contact2.html), 715 S. Dearborn St and then head over to Franklin and walk north. Franklin turns into Orleans at the river and ends at Wisconsin.
These two streets combined aren't long enough for a decent February walk so we will head north to Webster and go south on Hudson Ave, ending at Erie St.
The 6.67 mile point to point route can be found [here.](https://routes.rungoapp.com/route/ldXgSUN1dd)
Hudson Ave, named for the English navigator Henry Hudson, who explored America from about 1607 - 1611. He discovered the Hudson River in 1610.
Orleans St. was named for either New Orleans, LA, or the French city of Orleans on the banks of the Loire River. in 1429 Orleans was under siege by the English. They were turned back by Joan of Arc.
How do Hudson and Franklin tie into New Orleans, Orleans or Mardi Gras? Well, I'll tell you. Or I should say, ChatGPT will tell you this:
*The most direct and concrete connection between the names **Hudson** and **Franklin** with Mardi Gras is through a single historical figure and a specific event:*
*The strongest link is a historical figure who brought the names together during a major Mardi Gras season:*
* ***Mary Hudson Vandegrift*** *(originally Mary Evelyn Hudson) was a successful businesswoman who founded the Hudson Oil Company.*
* *In **1965**, she was crowned **Queen** of the **Krewe of Venus**, which was the first all-female Mardi Gras krewe established in New Orleans.*
* *The archival records of her Mardi Gras experience explicitly mention her husband, **Frank Vandegrift**.*
*The record states that a scrapbook album relating to the event includes correspondence and ephemera surrounding both the 1965 Mardi Gras celebration and her **20th wedding anniversary to her husband, Frank Vandegrift** (1898-1977).*
My lunch suggestion is Mr. Beef on Orleans and Huron. I have yet to dine at this iconic Chicago staple made popular lately by the high-intensity show, The Bear.

When Spring finally arrives in Chicago, it's our goal to be outside enjoying the weather as much as possible. And there's absolutely nothing better than joining a social intramural league that focuses on making new friends as much as the games. It's a blast getting to know new people playing and then afterwards over drinks at your league sponsor bar that all teams walk to!
Hanging out with the same group week after week for 5-7 weeks makes it pretty effortless to build lasting relationships over the duration of the season. That truly is the best part of my leagues :)
**ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME** (aka no experience required) and we can place anyone aged 21-42 on a team. Simply register by yourself or with friends and I'll put you with others around your age for the season.
Want to get on a team but can't make it to every game? No problem! We put extra players on every team for this very reason.
