CIFOR-ICRAF has worked in Peru since 2011, with its regional office based in Lima. We have built long-standing partnerships with government at various scales, the academia, and civil society, including the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), the National Forest and Wild Fauna Service (SERFOR), the National Organization of Andean and Amazonian Women (ONAMIAP), the Peru Amazon Research Institute (IIAP) and several other key partners.
Our work supports government efforts to meet global and national biodiversity targets, and national deforestation and restoration goals. We also work with local communities, developing tools for the conservation and recovery of Amazonian lands and the strengthening of tenure and livelihoods, as well as providing technical and evidence-based support to leverage its new agroforestry concessions scheme.
Research areas include forest landscape restoration, climate mitigation and adaptation, REDD+, peatland ecosystems and greenhouse gas measurements, coffee and cocoa value chains, tenure and decentralization, inclusive and gender-responsive policy, and extensive work on the promotion of agroforestry concessions, co-learning processes for the inclusion of agroforestry with key crops, co-design of agroforestry systems, trees on farms for biodiversity, and biodiverse and successional agroforestry systems.
Key outcomes
Informed Peruvian legislation on restoration through tree plantations (2017) and technical norms for multiple forest use in Brazil nut concessions (2016).
Supported the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) in providing an official definition of agroforestry in Peru.
Supported the government of Peru in creating conditions for the successful scaling of agroforestry concessions.
Informed Peru’s national restoration strategy, the National Program for Recovering Degraded Lands (PNRAD), and served as a scientific advisor institution for scaling restoration.
Provided science and engagement toward the recognition of peatlands in Peru’s climate change policy, its wetlands national strategy, and an upcoming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) on peatlands.
Partnered with the National Service for Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) to develop tailored tools to improve inclusion in multistakeholder forums for the management of natural protected areas.
Partnered with the national indigenous women organization (ONAMIAP) to develop tools to improve the inclusion of women in land governance in Peru.
Led a World Bank report that provides lessons and recommendations for gender-sensitive and gender-responsive conservation and sustainable development interventions in the Amazon, including Peru.
