Our mission is to invest in the growth, development, and well-being of our faculty and staff — the individuals who make our public health mission possible. We lead initiatives and offer resources that support recruitment, retention, career advancement, mentorship, and professional development across all stages of your journey at Gillings. FSA serves as a central hub for connection, support, and opportunity. Through close collaboration with departments across Gillings and the broader UNC community, we offer tailored training programs, well-being initiatives, and community-building activities that reflect the needs and aspirations of our people. Whether you're seeking guidance, growth, or a stronger sense of community, we’re here to help you succeed — and to ensure Gillings continues to be a place where faculty and staff feel proud to grow their careers.
Faculty and Staff Well-Being
At the Gillings School of Global Public Health, we prioritize the holistic well-being of our faculty and staff. Our Well-Being initiatives are designed to support the physical, mental, financial, emotional, social, and spiritual health -- recognizing that thriving individuals are essential to a strong and vibrant school.
We work to cultivate a culture where people feel supported, respected, and equipped to manage the demands of both work and life. Through a range of programs, resources, and partnerships, we aim to integrate well-being into daily routines, professional development, and our broader community practices.
By investing in the health and resilience of our people, we help ensure the long-term strength of our mission and the success of all who contribute to it.
Faculty & Staff Development
At the Gillings School of Global Public Health, we are dedicated to fostering the professional growth and development of our faculty and staff. Our Faculty & Staff Development initiatives are designed to provide comprehensive support and resources that enhance career advancement, leadership skills, and overall well-being
By offering tailored training programs, mentorship opportunities, and connections to resources across campus, we aim to create an environment where every member of our community can thrive and achieve their full potential. Our development programs are structured to address the unique needs of both faculty and staff, ensuring that everyone has access to the tools and support they need to succeed.
Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure (APT)
Faculty and Staff Affairs plays a central role in guiding the Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure (APT) process at the Gillings School. Working closely with Human Resources and academic leadership, we help ensure that all APT activities within the school align with University policies and uphold the highest standards of academic excellence.
We are here to support faculty throughout each stage of their academic journey — from initial appointment to promotion and tenure review. Our team provides essential resources, templates, timelines, and personalized guidance to help faculty navigate this important process with clarity and confidence.
We also serve as a bridge to campus-wide resources and support structures, connecting faculty with the tools and information they need to prepare strong, complete dossiers. Our goal is to foster a clear, fair, and supportive APT process that recognizes the contributions of our faculty and positions them for long-term success.
