Hi! Looks like you were my secret santa this year. Thank you for your recommendation. The Sky Crawlers is a film I've wanted to watch for a while now, so I'm glad you gave me the incentive to finally watch it. You were right to recommend it to me.

I think the visuals and atmosphere of the film were extremely striking and beautiful, however that's expected of an Oshii film. He said once he prioritizes visuals over storytelling. That being said, I think it was that which dragged the movie down somewhat. I had a very hard time getting invested in the movie mostly because of how the worldbuilding was handled. I thought the premise was very interesting, however in my opinion it's a difficult sell, and I have a hard time believing that we would make immortal children fight to the death before just having a real war. I think if we somehow managed to make a peaceful society, we simply wouldn't allow human dogfighting, and I don't think I agree with the idea that humans need to see tragedy to appreciate peace. Though, I'm not sure the movie 100% agrees with that either, as it also has a very "war is just pointless violence and death" message about it. If there was one other thing I really loved it was that war is portrayed as being manufactured by corporations where nobody is actually fighting for anything.

But anyways, my point is that I think the worldbuilding is a difficult sell and the movie didn't really achieve that for me because it focused too much on the atmosphere and not enough on the worldbuilding itself or the characters. I would have loved to see the characters question more why they're even doing this or if they have to.

That being said, I loved the twist at the end.

Much to think about with this film. Thank you for recommending it.

As you have Gunbuster in the anime that say their title in the eyecatch, you should add its sequel Diebuster as well.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
