Thanks! Love chatting with folks I have stuff in common with. Until now, I haven't talked to another metal fan on here.
Girls Band Cry: I can't really speak for the realism of Nina's progression as a first year guitarist obviously, but for comparison sake, I checked back on the developments of Yui from K-On and Kita from Bocchi the Rock as similarly beginner level players early on in their respective shows, and both of them seemed to progress towards becoming competent guitarists just as quickly as, if not quicker than Nina did (especially Yui).
You're right, the lightspeed progression as a player is not limited to just GBC. With Bocchi the Rock I find it more forgivable since Kita is only playing rhythm guitar, leaving the more skillful parts to Bocchi. K-On I haven't seen since I was maybe 19 years old, but I can give it a partial pass considering its aim is to be fun and spirited. GBC on the other hand wants to be dead serious.
I also find your statement about TogeToge not composing a song together until after signing with their record label talent agency to be pretty odd, since all of the insert songs they performed prior to the deal (apart from VOID of course) were clearly supposed to be TogeToge's own in-universe creations.
I would have to rewatch GBC to recall exactly why I said that, but I remember it happening towards the end of the season. IIRC, Tomo is the main composer for the band, and when one of them said something along the lines of "Let's compose our first song together", it seemed clear to me that Tomo had been doing all or most of the heavy lifting up until that point. The songs they performed previously, then, are all thanks to Tomo—assuming I remember correctly, that is. Maybe I missed something important or maybe it was due to the notoriously poor fansub I was watching, lol.
Beck: I'm pretty curious to know what "real-world wannabe" aspects of the show that you took issue with. Was it all the bullying and street violence, or whatever topics associated with adulthood that the show tried to tackle?
Now Beck, I haven't seen since I was about 17. Anyway, my disdain for this one can easily be chalked up to its wish fulfillment tendencies. The main guy just wants to be a rock star for the sake of being cool like the long hair guy. Maybe I got this wrong too or maybe the dub is just more irritating. I think if I am off base on Beck or GBC, then Beck is way more likely, since GBC was very recent. But yeah, main guy reminds me of a lot of the kids from my hometown who only wanted to be in a band because it would give them status, not because they care about making music. I hope that makes sense!
It was OK. I didn’t hate it. Was easy going entertainment at the time if I remember. I don’t recall what I said to literaturenerd but I’m sure I was justified.
