I welcome you aboard the good ship PolyDunami. This ship has sailed through the waters of anime and manga for many years, though I confess I haven't been sailing through here as much these days. I'm at least glad to have struck your curiosity as I continue sailing on. I've been doing this thing I've been putting off for a number of years called "growing up," maybe you've heard about it.
At the age of 5, ten years before PolyDunami first embarked, I had my first unwitting taste of anime when my sister had put on Sailor Moon. Our vice-captain, Mom, was disapproving of her choice, but we ventured on regardless. At the time, I didn't know what anime was and thought that it was just another cartoon. Little did I know how much was in store from our distant neighbours across the Pacific.
Many years had passed, and I finally reached the ripe old age of nine. This is when my second exposure to the realm of anime occurred. The channels we sailed through in Canada back then are called YTV and Teletoon; the former is where my brother and I struck gold in the form of Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Digimon, and Monster Rancher. Other shows I found during this time include Escaflowne and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Now, the website we're on seems to treat any cartoon which had work done in Japan as anime regardless of where it was first broadcast, and the show I saw back then that got that treatment was Cybersix.
Some more years went by and I went through this really messy, stormy journey called adolescence. I had no time for anime, for there were girls to pine for and homework to postpone in favour of video games, fan-fiction about video games, and reruns of classic TV gameshows. And when I logged fifteen years in this grand journey through life, I first set off on the good ship PolyDunami and I declared in my heart that I would somehow be well-known and beloved as the name my captain, Dad, gave to me.
Shortly after, I started to brave the waters of anime once more, and I discovered that the shows I had seen before were altered in more ways than just the changing of language. The violence had been toned down, the soundtrack replaced, and references to death and alcohol were removed. There was only one path for me to take; to watch the first anime I had ever seen in its original language. I searched for Sailor Moon in Japanese, and I managed to find several episodes of it separated into three parts on this little video streaming website called YouTube. Needless to say, I was hooked, and the first anime I ever saw would become the first anime I ever completed.
Thanks to the advent of the internet, I managed to find lots of other Japanese animated shows that caught my interest and several review websites to clue me in about other shows I needed to check out. But a lot of the shows I found, I couldn't finish at the time. These waters were not as well-managed as they are nowadays. Some of the other seas I sailed took precedence, and twenty-one years into this journey, I was one of the great many men who got caught in the wild, destructive maelstrom that was My Little Pony. But even that wouldn't prevent me from leaving this realm of anime for good, and I finally got my own dock here at MyAnimeList.
Perusing the database, I would build up my list of anime and manga I saw before. But that's not all, is it? The titles I had added were connected to hundreds, if not thousands more by way of franchises, crossovers, and even mere allusions. As an example; because I had watched One Piece, I would have to watch a series of commercials it was featured in, and those commercials also featured the 70s anime, Heidi. And Heidi is included with many shows in the World Masterpiece Theater. Another example as follows; Sailor Moon itself referenced the classic anime, Cutie Honey, and this opens up the door to a plethora of robot shows like Mazinger Z and Getter Robo.
Needless to say, I created for myself a very daunting list of titles; one which has now surpassed the infamous number of 9,000.
I'm finding myself sailing further and further away from Neverland, and so I may not have as much time or energy nowadays to peruse these wonderful animated shows. One thing is for certain; thirty-five years of sailing through this life is no short while, but I'm very far from done yet.
