Tamayura

As a child, Fuu "Potte" Sawatari and her late father would often visit his hometown of Takehara and take pictures of the surroundings together. Now, five years since their last visit, Fuu and her family have moved to the town so that she can start attending high school. Although her father has been deceased for some time, Fuu carries on his legacy through her love of photography and the pictures she takes with his old camera.

Believing that photographs have the power to turn the ordinary into something wonderful, Fuu and her friends grab every opportunity they can to capture the magic of everyday life on film and bring happiness to someone in the world who might need it.

Tamayura as a whole is Junichi Satou's attempt to making an anime that has Aria's comfort, wholesome vibe but with a melancholic tone behind the story and he did an amazing attempt for making an original anime.

The series as a whole has a focus in three things; which are photography, moving on, and eventually growing. The entire run of the anime has very trope-like acts that is very common in a lot of CGDCT anime, however what makes the anime special for me is the growth of the characters and how beautiful the surrounding area of Takehara and eventually parts of Hiroshima.

The characters I did ... mention how the anime had a lot of generic anime tropes happening, the characters themselves feels fairly uninspiring at least compared to big hitters such as Aria/Hidamari Sketch/K-On, however the plot really made up that fact and I find a lot of the characters much more enjoyable even if they feel very generic base personality wise. To add to the point there's a fair amount of big VA names for a series that is almost never talked about and they did a great job.

The pacing of the show is almost similar to Aria and at times a lot slower, same director and the music isn't as great in comparison but fits the series nicely.

Overall I am glad that this anime not only exists it also has a very satisfying closure which even for a finished adaptation is uncommon, and for an anime original to achieve that I can only thank Junichi Satou for probably lobbying this series to have a proper end.

This OVA I'm giving a 7/10, for the series overall it's an 8/10, worth investing your time into if you like these types of anime.

Mixed Feelings

Tamayura is one of the shockingly many slice of life/iyashikei entries within Junichi Satou’s catalog, with this one standing out as an anime original of his own creation rather than an adaptation of a manga. In that regard, we can plainly see the areas in which he both excels and falters. His visual presentation and mastery of mood are just as strong as ever, crafting a delightfully pretty town surrounded by luscious scenery for our main character, Fuu, to photograph in her continual pursuit of a hobby left to her by her late father. There’s an ever-present feeling of nostalgia wafting through the events of ... this story, and Fuu’s reverence for photography stemming from both her departed parent and a genuine desire to interact with this art form made the many bumps and scrapes along her journey much more engaging than I expected, in no small part to how expertly the cinematography captures the little moments that make up said journey.
Aside from Fuu, however, there’s not a lot here in terms of intriguing characterization, with one character half-defined by being a shotacon, and another entirely defined by primarily speaking in whistles. While the conversations never feel stilted and maintain a natural cadence and flow, anything not involving Fuu’s family or photography borders on being droll and unengaging. For now, I am will to view this as an extended pilot of sorts since there are several TV and film entries after this, and I do at least like the vibe of it all, so I think I’m willing to continue onto more installments to see how Satou fleshes out this particular group of cute girls doing cute things.

I must say I'm a fan of slice-of-life series, since I can appreciate the slow pacing of the show and simply enjoy of atmosphere created by the series. I loved Hidamari Sketch and Aria. I even liked series like Sketchbook and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, though they was never my favourites. But I cannot seem to enjoy what Tamayura has to offer.

First of all, the setting never really got to me. I have a bit of interest in photography, but I've never got the least interested while the cast is on the subject. Secondly, the cast is really, really boring. Fu and Kou are the only ... names I recall. I can only remember the rest of the cast as the whistling girl, the twin-tail who's always on high, and the nondescript ponytail. They do not seem to have any other traits I can remember.

So in the end, I can hardly remember anything about the series, even though I've only just finished watching it. I could hardly pay attention to what little the series has to offer. I had expected more from Hal Films...

The art quality is average and the music is forgettable. I feel that the seiyuus, even Kana Asumi, isn't doing a very good job with the characters even though she's more familiar with the genre.

I really cannot recommend this to anyone since I cannot seem to find any parts of the series interesting enough to talk about.
