Eve no Jikan (Movie)

In the Japan of the future, employing androids for various purposes is nothing out of the ordinary. However, treating androids on the same level as humans is frowned upon, and there is constant paranoia surrounding the possibility of robots defying humans, their masters. Those who appear too trustworthy of their androids are chided and labeled "dori-kei," or "android-holics."

High school student Rikuo Sakisaka notices when his house droid, Sammy, starts behaving curiously—she has been leaving the house without his instruction. When he inspects the movement logs in her database, a cryptic line grabs his attention: "Are you enjoying the time of EVE?" Accompanied by his friend Masakazu Masaki, Rikuo tracks the whereabouts of his houseroid to a cafe called Time of Eve, where it is forbidden for customers to display prejudice against one another. The cafe, Rikuo realizes, is frequented by both man and machine, with no evidence to tell either apart.

Each customer—from the cheerful Akiko, to a robot dangerously close to breaking down—has their own story and challenges to overcome. While Rikuo tries to reveal Sammy's intentions, he begins to question the legitimacy of the fear that drives humans to regard androids as nothing more than mere tools.

"Are you enjoying the time of Eve ?"

Time of Eve is the movie adaptation of the OVA eponym series

It is set in a futuristic world where androids assist humans in their daily life but society remains suspicious toward them and fear their growing implication in human relations.

Time of Eve is a grey place where discriminations between humans and androids are forbidden allowing thereby the existence of an area outside of the society's judgement where we will learn to know robots lifes and how they are more human than we may think.

The story is very psychological and focused on human and android relationships and what ... really defines our humanity more than action so if you prefer more calm and reflective stories you'll surely enjoy this film especially if you liked other series around the sames themes like Plastic Memories or Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song.

Now let's speak about the visuals, they're good especially the backgrounds which are very detailed but the main thing that catched my attention throughout the movie is that the mise en scène and the montage overall feel really cinematic giving the feeling to watch a movie with real actors being filmed with real cameras allowing us to be truly immersed in the story.


As for the musics they're marvelous and they fit very well the different atmospheres delivered by the movie.

To conclude I would say that Time of Eve is a very good film around futuristic themes humanity may have to face in the futur so I would recommend everyone to give it a shot, it's a good experience.

Mixed Feelings

This film is mainly about the relationships between robots and humans and their effects on society.

This film makes us wonder what will happen in the future with the so-called humanoid robots, the ethical laws that will be handled, and several other very interesting questions. This movie is very good and raises questions about our future and what it means to be human. How will living with humanoid robots affect our interpersonal relationships? What ethical limits should we impose on artificial intelligence programming?

Masaki's development in the film is very interesting, from his childhood, where he interacted with his robot as if it were another person, until ... a situation occurred that caused him to experience a change in his way of thinking. Now, seeing some humans treating robots as if they were humans made him uncomfortable, and in the end, an outpouring of feelings towards a certain character occurred, and his child self told him that he should change his current way of thinking and accept what his heart was really saying, not his head.

This is a very good movie.

Note: This movie contains the entirety of the OVA series plus a few extra added scenes making it the more complete choice and the OVAs completely redundant.

I'm reading the reviews here and seeing a bunch of people complaining that the movie's subtle mysteries or entire plot went over their heads, complaining that the SoL movie about a cafe(microcosm) didn't solve world peace and end slavery(macrocosm), that the story about human-AI relations didn't have the characters espouse overt commentary/narration on the subject (instead of subtlely writing every scene to show such relations and views in action), that the large ensemble of characters (who were pretty much ... all meticulously arranged to deliberately mislead the audience in various ways based on the audience's preconceptions) were all too few and predictable.
Frankly, I don't recommend this for the typical anime audience who needs to be spoonfed everything through brainless dialogue exposition dumps rather than piecing it together for themselves. Media illiterate people don't deserve to see this movie. it's too good for them.

Don't get me wrong though, it's not perfect. It has some minor issues.

The main perspective of the MC duo and the narrative as a whole comes across as extremely slave-owner apologist: 'Aw, you slave-owners are slowly learning to appreciate the lesson that it's wrong to enslave people. Pats on the back all around. What, an order? Yes master.' Like I get that it's necessary worldbuilding for drama, but jesus fucking christ are these humans dense assholes. How fucking dumb do these people have to be to not see that android girl acting like a completely normal person, immediately conclude that these androids are substantially people, and immediately feel disgusted at the way they're treating these people as slaves. Literally all this kid has to say is "Act freely." to his slave to find out what she's really like but instead he goes full on slave catcher mode towards his property.
"I'm a cat" girl seems to have had almost all her lines accidentally replaced with a very annoying phrase. She would have been better cast using a real cat actor instead of a child actor who can't act as a cat to save her life.
There are notes of shoddy harem romance in here with the self-insert MC's housemaid and the barista both being alluded to as romantically into him for no real reason, and they do a weird Japan pedo aside with the kid's panties.

It is unfortunate that there hasn't been a sequel yet, but it is a complete story on its own even though the main plotline can be further explored and some of the characters related to it were largely unutilized in their excess of screen time baiting the overarching political plot (BladeRunner agent, exposition/narration Science Mom, Science Father, Anti-robot father). Plus the MC's sister contributed nothing but 'android-holic ew' while wasting time.

Character subplot spoilers:
The boy who learned to stop caring about what society thinks and do what he likes instead (piano, androids).
The boy who learned that the android(paralleling his mother) he cared about never stopped caring about him even though his father wouldn't let it speak to him. It risked everything to protect him from being caught at the cafe he mentioned frequenting. He learned to let go of his prejudice against robots. Learned the broader lesson that he can trust people rather than keep them all at arms length and push them away as he did his friend and all the customers he finally accepted.
The cafe barista who was injured as a child next to her robot by the anti-robot supremacists led by the boy's father who got divorced around that time. Her father was the creator of the AI program that fathered all modern androids, who along with his daughter cared for robots as people rather than slaves and started making cafes and inviting androids even though it meant having to disown her mother who was originally against robots being people.
The sexualized bodyguard android who broke protecting her master and has been left behind (lonely) unable to get repairs on her own because it would risk leaking problematic information (blackmarket sexual modifications/private information) finds love in another android who may also have been modified for sexual use, overcoming their anxiety about both human-android and android-android relationships.

9/10 (where 5/10 is average)
