Some stories treat romance as fireworks, bright, loud, and immediate. Love Through a Prism chooses a different path. It treats love more like light passing through glass. It's so quiet, until it slowly refracts into colors you didn’t notice were there. Set in early-20th-century London, the story follows Lili Ichijouin, a determined young Japanese woman who travels overseas to study painting at a prestigious art academy. Her journey is not simply about learning technique, but about proving that her dream deserves to exist. The pressure surrounding her is immediate that her family gives her only six months to become the academy’s top student. If she ... fails, her artistic aspirations end there. London greets her with both opportunity and loneliness. The academy is filled with prodigies, eccentric personalities, and rivalries where talent is admired. Among them stands Kit Church, a gifted yet emotionally distant painter whose reputation precedes him. Kit is the kind of artist who seems perpetually dissatisfied with the world and even more dissatisfied with himself. Where Lili paints with hope, Kit paints with restless intensity, as if he’s trying to wrestle meaning out of every canvas.

Their first encounters are anything but romantic. Kit’s blunt honesty clashes with Lili’s sincerity. Their artistic philosophies seem almost incompatible. However, the more they observe each other’s work, the more something subtle begins to shift. Lili’s optimism starts to soften Kit’s cynicism and Kit’s relentless standards push Lili beyond the limits she once believed were enough. Their connection blooms through several moments such as late nights in the studio, critiques that sting yet inspire, and the silent understanding that comes from sharing the same obsession. The academy itself becomes a living stage where every student develops a different relationship with art. Some treat painting as ambition, others as escape, and a few as the only language they know for expressing themselves. This ensemble of characters adds texture to the narrative, and the world feel like a place where everyone is searching for a fragment of their own identity.

One of the anime’s greatest strengths lies in its atmosphere. The visual direction captures a nostalgic version of London filled with foggy streets, warm studio lighting, and carefully detailed environments that feel almost like paintings themselves. Watching the characters work in sketching, mixing pigments, struggling to translate emotion into color, adds an intimacy that rarely explored in stories about artists. The animation doesn’t just show finished art, it shows the vulnerability behind creating it. At its core, the series explores a simple yet powerful idea that art is not merely about beauty, but about understanding oneself. Through successes and failures, Lili and the artist friends around her slowly realize that their work reflects way more than skill. It reflects who they are, what they fear, and what they hope others might see.

The series does occasionally slow down due to the number of characters it explores. Because the story spends time giving each character their own space and development, the pacing can feel uneven at times. However, this is also a direct result of the anime’s careful writing. Instead of letting supporting characters underdeveloped, the narrative invests in them, giving their struggles and perspectives real weight. The pacing trade-off ultimately feels worthwhile because it enriches the emotional world of the story. Everything the series builds toward reaches its emotional peak in the final episode. After such a restrained and carefully developed relationship, the romantic payoff between Lili and Kit feels deeply earned.

One of the most breathtaking moments happens near the end, when Kit brings Lili to a hidden cave he once discovered, where a garden of lily flowers quietly grows. Standing in the middle of that field, flowers that share her name, Lili becomes part of the scenery itself. Then the lilies begin to rise into the air, drifting upward like fragments of light. For a brief moment the scene feels almost unreal. Kit simply watches, completely captivated. And like the artist he is, his instinct isn’t to speak, it’s to paint. He begins capturing the moment on canvas, turning that fleeting beauty into something that can last. It’s an astonishingly romantic scene. The kind of moment that allows you sitting there and thinking like, "Wow...this is unbelievably romantic."

By the end, Love Through a Prism feels less like a typical romance anime and more like a carefully painted story about dreams, art, and the ways people change each other. It remains a thoughtful and emotionally reflective story. It understands that creativity is rarely loud. Often, it grows through doubt, persistence, and the courage to keep painting even when the canvas refuses to cooperate. The series leaves an impression similar to standing in front of a painting whose meaning reveals itself slowly. What initially looks simple begins to show layers of color, emotion, and intention the longer you look at it. Like light passing through a prism, the story reminds everyone that dreams, love, and identity rarely appear as a single color. They become beautiful precisely because they break into many.

Anyway, keep in mind that no opinion is ever purely objective, and every perspective remains open to discussion. Even so, each viewpoint still holds its own value. If you happen to see things differently, simple mutual respect is more than enough. That same respect is the spirit behind this reflection as well. Maybe I went into this with my expectations too high because of the rating (around 8.5 at the time of writing the review) and artsy setting, but I was a bit disappointed with this anime. It's not bad, not at all: music, animation and voice acting are pretty good and it has some really good scenes that might make you tear up a bit. But the story is a very cliché romance that doesn't take many risks and you can predict fairly easy what's going to happen. Delayed confessions, misunderstandings and untimely discussions can also get a bit frustrating when it gets to a point.
That ... being said, the romance and main couple are pretty cute (when the story let's them be) and there are some really solid emotional scenes, which is the reason why I'm giving this show a relatively high rating. So if you go in planning to watch a pretty standard romance anime, you will probably like it as it does that job well.
I also feel like this anime some times touches some interesting topics but doesn't really reflect on them that much, or just finds an easy solution and tosses them aside quickly. And, because the main cast are all artists, maybe I was looking for some fleshed-out scenes discussing art, love and how they relate, and while it does do that some times, I feel it fell kinda short on that aspect, at least for me.
Minor spoilers ahead discussing the ending a bit: It left me with some mixed feelings; it is pretty sweet but I'd have preferred if they just took a bit more risks, as I said at the beginning. It feels like it would have elevated the anime a bit more for me if everything wasn't so unrealistically smooth. Especially because, near the end, they introduce a "realistic" plot point, which was probably one of the most interesting points of the series for me, so I kind of expected the anime to get a bit more serious from that point on. That's why it disappointed me a bit when the ending was just, again, so cliché and safe.

Love Through A Prism was a frustrating watch from start to finish, largely because of its female lead, Lily.

The biggest issue is her characterization. From Episode 1, she already left a bad impression. A kind classmate went out of her way to show her around, and Lily just walked off without even a simple thank you. That moment perfectly summarizes her character throughout the series.

She is consistently rude, loud, and unnecessarily hostile toward people who are trying to be kind.

Instead of meaningful development, the story leans heavily into her insecurity as if that alone justifies her behavior.

Her interactions with the male lead are especially exhausting. ... Rather than building chemistry through growth and mutual understanding, much of their dynamic revolves around overreactions, jealousy, and immaturity. By the end, any attempt at character growth feels superficial and unearned.
