Gnosia

Saddled with amnesia, Yuuri awakens on an interstellar cruiser drifting through space. Unfortunately, a lack of memories is the least of Yuuri's problems. Among the four other crew members is a Gnosia: a Gnos infectee whose goal is the eradication of humanity. The Gnosia appears human in all other respects, so the uninfected have little choice but to vote on whom they suspect to be the enemy, hoping to neutralize the Gnosia by putting them into cold sleep. If the Gnosia survives the vote, they will eliminate one crew member during the cruiser's following warp, when only the Gnosia remains conscious.

Voting quickly proves to be an unreliable strategy, and Yuuri is left one-on-one with the Gnosia. Just when all hope seems lost, time seemingly loops back to when Yuuri first awakened. With each time loop, however, conditions aboard the ship change—neither the size of the crew nor the members' identities remain constant. Trapped in both time and space, Yuuri must figure out how to escape the loops and save humanity from the Gnosia.

Gnosia is one of the most interesting anime I’ve seen in a while and one of the best shows of the year thus far. I was immediately hooked from the opening episode with the “Among Us” style premise and time loop, but what really made this a great watch over time was the focus on the interpersonal relationships between the characters and Yuri’s character development.

Adapting visual novels into anime is always difficult, you’ll always have to compromise on some parts of the story because they’re different mediums, but I felt the number of episodes and the quality of the direction here helped make up ... for any shortcomings. As an anime only, I thought every episode was very well paced and the staff did such a great job of gradually expanding the world week after week, drip feeding us lore and setting up new mysteries. What’s really cool about Gnosia is that it’s a very interactive story. You might think a time loop story like this would get repetitive or boring after awhile, but it stays interesting by challenging you to identify the Gnosia, introducing new roles into the game, adding unique obstacles for Yuri to overcome each loop etc. For a story with 10+ loops, they made every one of them feel different and fun. Actually, “fun” might not be the best term because a lot of these loops are downright heartbreaking. Some of the ones with Jina, SQ and Setsu brought me to tears and devastated me. There’s a nice variety in the sort of stories each loop has ranging from wholesome slice of life to romance to “omg, I want to die” levels of despair.

Earlier, I mentioned this being an “among us” style story, but apparently it’s actually based on a game called werewolf, which I’ve never heard of prior to this show. I’d be lying if I said I knew how to play now, I have a basic understanding of the concept of the game, but the intricacies are still lost on me. Even with that, though, I was able to follow along and enjoy Yuri’s struggles because of the exposition throughout the episodes. They do a good job of walking you through all the characters’ movements and strategies so even us newcomers can keep up. I’m not going to lie, around episode 14-16 I did start zoning out during the planning phases when Yuri would try to sus out the Gnosia and survive the rounds just because I became more invested in the overall story, I.e breaking the loop, finding out the mystery of what the Gnosia are, Yuriko and SQ stuff, etc., but your mileage may vary. They do continue to build upon earlier iterations by introducing more characters, abilities, roles and twists into the story so none of them feel 100 percent the same. I just got a little tired of it by the end of the story and just wanted to focus on the characters. That’s just a testament to how well written they are.

Speaking of characters, wow, they made this show so fun. It’s so cool to have a story with such a big cast where MOST(Kukrushka being the exception) of them get ample development and shine. The fact Yuri had such distinct relationships with every single character made each loop feel different and special. Even when it was a loop with a character we’d focused on before, the second loop might explore a different angle of their personality or flesh them out even more. We got to see the best and worse in everyone and if you think about it, that’s really what you have to do to get to know a person. I really enjoyed seeing Yuri form such powerful bonds with everyone, learn from them and then apply those lessons in subsequent games! Of particular note to me were their relationships with SQ and Jina who really became their biggest confidants as the show progressed. Yuri’s relationship with Setsu is probably my overall favorite thing in the show, but I can’t get too into that without spoiling, so I’ll leave that alone. They mean so much to me though!

Animation is pretty standard here, there’s nothing that requires a ton of sakuga. The direction and voice acting are really the big things to note and they’re awesome. I think the show’s direction took it up a notch around the halfway mark when they changed ED’s and it just never looked back. It was pure peak from then to the end of the show. The voice acting in this show really made so many big scenes hit that much harder and helped make Yuri and the crew’s relationships feel authentic.

Gnosia was such a fun experience from the first episode to the last for me. I really can’t complain about anything in this series other than maybe it would’ve been nice to see a little more of the universe, but the cramped feeling of the show contributed to the tension and horror elements, so I understand. Seeing Yuri go from this shy and reserved person to a leader over the course of the show was great. The supporting characters were awesome and the twists week after week kept me on the edge of my seat. I’ll definitely miss this one and can’t recommend it enough.

Mixed Feelings

First thing anyone getting into this series should know is that it's not at all a death game anime. A lot of negative reviews seem to stem from people getting into it expecting a death game, gruesome kills and fight for survival, but Gnosia is really more of a sports anime where getting killed has stakes comparable to being hit in a dodgeball match. Sure, the whole point is to avoid it, but no one's going to mourn you.

Instead, the stakes for our protagonist are to try to somehow escape the time loop they've been thrust into by a parasite attached to them and avoid ... being condemned to play a Werewolf game onboard a spaceship for all eternity. And it's a very literal take on Werewolf - the Gnosia play by the rules and never eliminate more than one person at night, and the crew is more than happy to wait for the next day to see who died if it lets them weed out the Gnosia before they take over the ship (at the exact moment when the Gnosia constitutes more than half the crew, no sooner, no later). The anime does try to justify each of those things diegetically - the meetings and voting are the compromise with the ship's AI from the usual procedure applied in case of Gnosia contamination (you can guess what that is), only the initial scan can precisely estimate the number of Gnosia onboard while the daily scans can only tell if there's still Gnosia around or not, etc. - but you just have to suspend your disbelief and accept that things are playing out by the Werewolf rules.

So how is our Yuri supposed to escape the time loop? Turns out, the parasite that causes the time loops is hungry for knowledge, and it just so happens that the fourteen people we're stuck with on the ship have some pretty colorful personalities and interesting backstories that the parasite would just love to hear. So it's up to Yuri to try to get to know each of those people better and gain their trust - which usually also involves winning the Werewolf game first, since while the Gnosia are around everyone's on edge and not really willing to discuss personal details in an atmosphere of mutual distrust - and also making sure that the right people survive to the end. So the usual formula is - Yuri wakes up and figures out what the setup of the current loop is and who the parasite wants them to focus on, then over a series of meetings the Werewolf game plays out (sometimes with a brain teaser for the viewer to figure out who might be the Gnosia), and if everything goes well Yuri and the chosen person survive to the end and do something together that lets Yuri know that person better. The silver key gets a little more full, Yuri disappears from the current timeline and wakes up in a different one on day 1 again, rinse, repeat.

The major strength of Gnosia - both the anime and the game it's based on - is the colorful cast of characters Yuri finds themselves with in various configurations. Some are more complex than others, some more likable than others, but even the more one-note characters have enough going for them to make the viewer want to learn where they came from and what their deal is. The time loop means that none of them really change over time, but as we get to slowly know them better they do, in a way, grow. The designated sexy girl SQ is always going to be the designated sexy girl in every loop, but once Yuri learns what her deal is her personality takes on a different light than at the beginning.

Said cast of characters - specifically the sheer size of it - is also, unfortunately, a bit of a problem for the anime as compared to the game. In the game, the player spends a lot of time playing the Werewolf game with said characters as bots - and it does a stellar job creating an illusion of personality for each of the bots. Ever played a singleplayer game and thought to yourself "man, this bot in particular must really hate me" even though you know it's all RNG in the background? Gnosia the game leans into this feeling - even before the plot comes into play, playing a few rounds with Yuriko shutting down your arguments and telling you to STFU, or having Kukrushka get out of suspicion by acting all cute and sad only to turn out Gnosia in the end, is enough to establish some baseline feelings from the player towards all of those characters. Then, once the aforementioned plot events happen, they hit harder since we already are familiar with the characters.

The anime, for the most part, adapts the plot events very faithfully and expands on them, and to someone already familiar with the game it's a treat to see those events fully animated and brought to life and relive those emotions. But if you only watch the anime, you don't get that baseline, and with 21 episodes (including the epilogue) and 14 characters a lot of them just aren't established well enough for the event to be meaningful. Often the first time the character is relevant is their introduction, then the second time is their big event that in the game comes after ten hours, and then they fade into the background. With the amount of episodes the anime had to work with and all the other things it tried to do - all the characters, the A plot, the background villain plot, the not-romance, the complexity of the Werewolf game itself and the murder-mystery-at-home episodes with the complicated setups that need to be logicked out - there's just not enough time to give everything justice and room to breathe without leaving some of it on the cutting room floor. Pacing is messy, and just as the anime seems to throw new elements in and break out of the setup phase into something interesting in the epilogue, it suddenly ends.

Hence the high rating - because the anime is a gorgeous love letter to the game, the few elements that aren't straight adaptations (most notably Yuri, who in game is just a faceless, mute visual novel protagonist, and their entire personality is anime-original) fit really well into the story, the characters might not all get the screentime they deserve but they are still interesting and sympathetic across the board, the music is amazing (both the OP/ED originals and the game music adaptations - the game's soundtrack was already really good, and it gets refreshed arrangements in the anime), the voice work is great both in the original and in the dub, and if you can accept the rough pacing there are emotional moments, humor, and brain teasers to be found. But also mixed feelings - because the game is a far, far superior way to experience this story first, and the anime works much better as said love letter than as a standalone work.

Preliminary (12/21 eps)

This was genuinely terrible. It's set up as some type of "game" but what exactly is the game here? All we do is follow around the idiot MC as they talk to random goofballs, and then the episode ends where it began. Strategy? LOL. MC couldn't solve a coloring book. This is like the worst detective story in history. I can't even call this a scifi series since it's more focused on being a circus fashion show. It's definitely not a thriller since everything repeats making events meaningless. Even if something were permanent, why would we care about any of these clowns? Do we want ... pink flamingo alien #5 to win?
