Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru

For 20 years, Beryl Gardenant has taught various people as the master of his father's sword-fighting dojo in a backwater village. Many have become astounding swordsmen themselves, but Beryl remains quite humble, referring to himself as an old man. His former disciples all disagree, including Allucia Citrus, a girl who graduated from Beryl's training over 10 years ago and is currently the commander of the Royal Order of Knights.

Wishing to reveal her cherished teacher's true greatness, Allucia recommends Beryl to her superiors, leading to his appointment as a special instructor for the Order by imperial command. She delivers the news herself—though Beryl has yet to realize her deeper motive. Pressured by his aging parents, Beryl reluctantly accepts the job and moves to the capital. There, he meets more of his past students, such as Surena Lysandra, now a black-rank adventurer, and Ficelle Harbeller, a prominent member of the Magic Corps. Before long, word begins to spread: not even the strongest warriors can match the "old man" from the countryside.

I've been waiting for something like this for a whille. This anime doesn't fall inline with the overpowered character type (I've no issue with those, they can be good fun) but instead the MC and the people around him are decisive in their fights. I do really wish it was explained why people aren't as skilled as him in a fight. My only coplaint is that the MC gets well adjusted to fights a little too fast. Maybe he's been in a few prior, but it's whatever. Overall this is worth the watch. It doesn't try to be anything it's not. The swordplay here is ... where it shines.

Mixed Feelings

The premise is actually very good and the story had a lot of potential. Sadly, the execution is weak.

The way the story is told is messy, and some plot points just do not make sense. There are scenes that completely break immersion, like characters doing things that clearly should not be possible in the world the show sets up (like outrunning a horse). There are more weird moments like this, but mentioning them would get into minor spoilers.

Animation is decent overall, and the soundtracks are fine.

One thing that stood out in a good way is the sound design. Small details like sound of clothes ... moving, or wooden utensils scraping against a wooden plate while eating, are surprisingly well done, but also I was never heard before that biting a sausage makes a crunch sound like a potato chip; so there are few minor flaws too.

The characters are very simple, extremely straightforward and lack depth, makes them forgettable.

The series starts fine, losing it's momentum, then gradually gets worse. The end felt cheesy.

It is held together mostly by its few redeeming qualities, so it's just "fine" overall, 6 out of 10.

Still, I have enjoyed some of this. I may check the second season if I encounter it's release in the future. Otherwise, I don't find myself typing it's long and forgettable name and look for it.

The synopsis of Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni naru really appealed to me, but unfortunately, the execution is a complete disappointment. Instead of building a coherent narrative, it's bogged down in harem clichés, which are particularly jarring due to the age difference between the protagonist, Beryl Gardenant, and the female supporting characters. However, Beryl can't be blamed here; he behaves appropriately towards his former students. Aside from their extraordinary abilities and their infatuation with their former teacher, they don't seem to contribute much to the story.
Basically, the story meanders along in a slice-of-life style, which isn't really my cup of tea. I find the whole ... thing lacking in depth.
The only small bright spot is Mewi, who joins the story as Beryl's adopted daughter. Beryl herself is also a pleasant main character, shining through her humility and calm demeanor.
The plot focuses on Beryl's skills as a swordsman, and these are surprisingly well-animated. While the animation isn't world-class, I've definitely seen worse.
Finally, I want to complain about the flat dialogue. I don't know if I noticed it because of the German translation, which, by the way, is absolutely terrible.
My conclusion about Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni naru is that a lot of potential was wasted in favor of fanservice.
